Science & Engineering Fair returns to Assumption the evening of Thursday, March 20th– 6-7:30pm
Volunteers are needed: Click here to sign up.
Bring some “bytes” to eat and share with other attendees. STEM themed food is encouraged but not required. We also need help with set up, decorating, and teardown. Thank you!
The fair will take place in the gym and feature individual projects from all ACS middle school students. Younger grades work as a class or in small groups to complete projects as well. Mark your calendars for an evening of science fun!

Staffing Updates/Retirements
We are both pleased and saddened to announce that Mrs. Eusebio and Mrs. VonFeldt will be retiring at the end of this year. Both of these teachers have been invaluable parts of our teaching staff and will be deeply missed!

School Commission News
NOTE 1:
On Wednesday, January 21st, Chair of the School Commission Basi Rodriguez, Principal Karen Evans, Facilities Manager Brenna Sebens, Former Whatcom County Sheriff Bill Elfo, and Community Engagement Bellingham PD officer Jon Knutsen met to walk through the campus.
We walked the entire perimeter of the campus, evaluating everything from safe grounds coverings to fencing. BPD officer commended us for our efforts in keeping our grounds trimmed and safe. A few minor changes were suggested, but they were all things we had planned for come spring. There are a few outdated cameras that monitor the parking lot that we would like to update and increase if funds are available.
Officer Knutsen walked the interior of the school, and Principal Evans gave a description of the procedure for our lockdown protocol. Officer Knutsen seemed happy with our procedure but also informed us that there is a new protocol that schools are starting to adapt to. Luckily, the training and materials for this are offered by a nonprofit for relatively inexpensive, and transitioning to this new system shouldn’t be difficult. At the end of the meeting, Officer Knutsen said that he doesn’t often give places a glowing report, but we are one of them. A few minor changes will be added to the docket. New cameras were quoted out, and if you wish to donate to that fund, please contact Mark Wheeler, lead of the non-tuition committee at the Commission, via email at bediende.mark@gmail.com.

- Track and Field is starting in a few weeks. Please remember to turn in your registration forms by Friday, March 14th.

EDP/After School Program Snacks
*Please remember to send snacks with your child if they will be attending EDP after school. There are some snacks to supplement if a child forgets but generally we do not provide snacks to all the students on a regular basis.

Attendance Procedures for Illness or Vacation
When there is going to be an absence due to illness or trip or family emergency, please email or call the front office: theoffice@assumption.school
Best practice is to always include the homeroom teacher and the office at the same time. Finally, the Archdiocese does not require as many days as the public schools and so we are blessed to have this extra time for longer weekends or staff development, and we ask kindly that families try to take trips during our school scheduled days off.
ACS alumnus, Genevieve Whelan, is hosting a heart healthy impactful event at Sacred Heart Hall. All are welcome to come.

ACS Bilingual Student Stations of the Cross
ACS is responsible for hosting Friday, March 28th Bilingual Student-Led Stations of the Cross at 6:00.
Please consider signing up your child for a part. Needed: English and Spanish speakers, cross and candle bearers, Singing a transition. Students would need to be at the church by 5:45. There will be a quick rehearsal on Tuesday, March 25th right after school in the church. (3:15pm – 4pm) It is a great way to bring Lenten faith practices in your family.

St. Joachim Pilgrimage-local
We are so grateful to have the Lummi tribe in our area and to celebrate with them the news of Archbishop Etienne’s confirmation of St. Joachim as a pilgrimage destination in Western Washington during the Jubilee Year of Hope.

Archdiocese of Seattle’s 175th Anniversary Celebration
The Archdiocese of Seattle is celebrating its 175th anniversary! We are all invited to join Catholics across Western Washington to serve others together as the loving Body of Christ through the Season of Service, which runs from March to May of 2025.
You can participate by serving and logging in your hours. Together we are trying to log in 175,000 hours! You can join service opportunities at your parish, school or ministry. Youth Group News
Dear Middle School Families,
I hope the first week of Lent has gone well for your family. I wanted to send a quick reminder about the Middle School Bible Studies, which are held on Fridays during Lent at Sacred Heart Hall from 5:00 PM to 5:45 PM. Afterward, the Stations of the Cross will take place at Sacred Heart Church across the street at 6:00 PM, followed by a soup supper back in the hall. The event typically concludes around 7:00 PM, though it may run a bit later depending on the line.
The stations and meal are open to the entire family, so we encourage you to join as a family.

Saint of the Week Question:
Answer to last week: Why do we have ashes or put ashes on our heads each year?
The early Church adopted the Jewish custom of ash as an external symbol of grief, mourning or repentance. Ash represents our mortality; just as ashes are the remains of wood consumed by fire, so our bodies will be reduced to dust after we die. We recall our mortality to practice humility, reminding ourselves of our extreme lowliness and the brevity of earthly life.
Traditionally, the forty days of Lent represent Our Lord’s forty day fast in the desert. So then as Lent begins our 40 days, we make the cross on our foreheads in ash to remind us that we ought to repent of our sins throughout the Lenten season.

New Question: These two women saints were martyred together in the Roman Colosseum during the Christian persecution in the 3rd century. One was a new nursing mother and the other was 8 months pregnant.
Both were very steadfast and strong in their faith in God. The Roman emperor at the time had them thrown to the wild beasts for their Christian beliefs.
Who are these beautiful examples of young mothers with a desire to only love Our Lord?
