Curriculum Overview

Grades K – 2 | Introduction to Spanish 1

  • Spanish is taught twice a week for Kindergarten through 2nd grade.
  • The text we are using is Calico Spanish Level 1 by Cindy Colyer and Erica Fischer, fourth edition.
  • The curriculum includes Flash Cards, Resources on CD, Music CD and DVD, Literature, a songbook, a Student Activity book, Assessments, and posters.
  • We will spend our time practicing simple questions and responses, singing songs, playing games, practicing some writing, and reading books in order to learn the language and about the culture.
  • Concepts to be covered at this level include:
    • Calendar days and months
    • The Alphabet
    • Numbers
    • Colors
    • Animals
    • Verbs
    • Adjectives
    • Shapes
    • Parts of the Body
    • Short, simple Conversation
    • Holidays
    • Prayers

Grades 3 – 5 | Introduction to Spanish 2

  • Spanish is taught twice a week for grades 3 and 4 and three times a week for grade 5.
  • We are using the Calico Spanish Level 2 by Cindy Colyer, Sara-Elizabeth Cotrell, and Erica Fischer, version 2.0, as well as other supplemental texts I have.
  • This curriculum includes Books, Flash Cards, Student Activity Pack, Assessments, CD-ROM, Music CD, and posters.
  • Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking will aid students in learning the language and about other cultures. Students will be able to talk a little more about themselves in Spanish.
  • Developing of student writing. Students will write a few sentences journal style in their notebooks so by the end of the year their progress can be tracked.

Grades 6 – 8 | Spanish 1

  • Spanish is taught 4-5 periods each week, with one block period each week.
  • We are using the text Realidades 1 published by Prentice Hall. This curriculum includes textbook, workbooks (for both native and non-native speakers of Spanish), online resources, and a CD-ROM. This is the text that Bellingham School District uses for Spanish.
  • Developing of student writing. Students will write a few sentences journal style in their notebooks so by the end of the year their progress can be tracked.
  • Students will continue to develop their Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking skills. The goal is to prepare these students to enter Spanish 2 by the time they graduate high school. We would like to see them reach an intermediate-low proficiency level.
