Fun Run success!

ACS students, teachers, staff, and parents…YOU DID IT! Together, we raised $21,067.40 for the 38th Annual Ellen Anderson Fun Run, topping our (stretch) goal of $20K! We are thrilled with this outcome and so incredibly grateful to everyone who helped in big and small ways, particularly our Fun Run Co-Chairs Natalie Milligan and Shannon Zebrowski, Eloisa Townsend, and Melissa Hanson. Thank you everyone for supporting this wonderful event. Please note that top earners and raffle winners will be announced in next week’s news. Thank you for your support of this great PTC event!

BHS XC Camp

The BHS Cross Country team (in partnership with Bellingham Parks and Recreation) is hosting a Cross Country Camp from June 27-30 for students with and without running experience entering grades 5 – 8 in the fall. In the past, we have had great representation from ACS at our camp, and we hope to soar with the Eagles again this summer.

Please see the digital flyer for details!

Staffing Update

We want to let parents know of a recent change to staffing for next year. Mr. Armando Mendoza, the current K-3 Spanish teacher, will not be returning in the fall. Mr. Mendoza started with us at the beginning of the school year and has incorporated art and music into his lessons throughout the year to make it engaging for students. He is always so kind with them, and he has been such a positive addition to the staff. We are grateful for his ministry and wish him all the best in whatever comes next.

We are also pleased to announce that Veronica Flores has been hired as the preschool assistant teacher for the 2022-2023 school year. Mrs. Flores received her B.A. in Sociology this spring and has always wanted to work with children. She’ll be continuing her education towards a Masters in counseling this fall, and while she is working on that degree she is excited to be a part of our preschool program. Mrs. Flores is also the mom to Armani in the third grade with Mrs. Martin-Zender. Please join us in welcoming her to the staff.

Celebrating our alumni- Volunteer service and scholarships

This week, we want to recognize Sam Pacheco (‘12) (brother to Santi in eighth grade) who is graduating from University of Washington with a degree in civil engineering. Continuing with the servant leadership he first experienced at Assumption, Sam is traveling to Eswatini (formerly Swaziland in Southern Africa) with a program called Engineers in Action to help build a footbridge. Sam has also worked in Guatemala and Nicaragua as a volunteer with Engineers without Borders. We want to celebrate Sam’s efforts to give back to his community. Please see the video he put together explaining his volunteer service and if you’d like to give to his project, you can click on the link for his GoFundMe page at https://gofund.me/45212094

We also want to congratulate Aidan Anderson (‘16) and Alexandra Streeter (‘16) for being the recipients of the first annual Alumni Scholarships for graduating high-school seniors. Thanks to our alumni from the Ziels family, and to Financial Plan (Twining and Wolf alumni) who are funding the first three years of these two- $1,000 annual scholarships. Congratulations to the other alumni who applied for the scholarship and are doing great things after graduation from high school: Daniel Maeda, Marjorie Sotelo, Madeline Reyes, and Emma Balogh

Family Promise Bed Race on Sunday, June 26th from 2 pm to 4 pm

The Interfaith Coalition and Family Promise have moved their Annual Bed Race (typically in September) to June this year. This is a great way to raise money for those experiencing homelessness in Whatcom County while having a bit of fun with your closest friends. We would love to have a team represented by Assumption Catholic School. There is a frame and bed available, so we just need a group to assemble it by the Memorial Day Parade on May 28th and then use it for the race on June 26th. For more information about the race or to register your team, visit https://www.interfaith-coalition.org/familypromisebedrace

Family Promise of Whatcom County is starting its 5th year of serving the needs of this community to assist children and their families experiencing homelessness through meals, temporary housing and education with a goal to re-establish their independence. To date nearly 100 families have had a fresh start through Family Promise and the Interfaith Coalition. If you choose not to race, you can also sponsor the Family Promise Bed Race at http://bit.ly/bedraceentryfee2022
