Dear Families, January 17, 2025
From Mrs. Scarlett – Your students are precious people and I have enjoyed the opportunity in student teaching to instruct their learning in a variety of subjects in this new year of 2025 thus far. Math, Spelling, Cursive, Science, Reading, and Religion have been an honor to teach to the students. I will be student teaching until January 31st. Mrs. MZ will be chaperoning at Mt. Baker for the middle schoolers on Tuesday so I will be the “main” teacher. Your children are a blessing in many ways! Thank you for your support.

Academics
Religion – Fourth Grade Theologians learned about the fortitude, one of the Cardinal Virtues of the Catholic Church. Fortitude requires three things: persistence, patience and magnanimity. We discuss two of the three. We will finish next week. We also celebrated Martin Luther King, jr. and discussed what “dream” we have to change the world to be better.
Language – Fourth grade readers are analyzing a book in a small group. These are the books we are currently reading: Freckle Juice; The Whipping Boy; Stone Fox; and The Castle in the Attic. We are analyzing, preparing for, speaking about and writing about vocabulary words, character development and plot. In Spelling, students focused on Unit 17 – soft g words. In grammar, students focused on plural and singular nouns, singular possessive nouns and finally plural possessive nouns.
Math – The students have learned how to do long division up to 4-digits by a one digit. Additionally, multi-step division word problems were introduced and it was neat to see the improvement over time. We have concluded chapter 6! Woohoo! Keep practicing facts!
Science – We began a new unit on Light Energy and the students experimented with 5 stations of hands-on learning about refraction, prisms, reflection, transparent, translucent, opaque and more! It was the first science experiment I created with stations (with Mrs. MZ’s help) and it appeared the students enjoyed it.
Social Studies – Historians are reading and discussing Washington state history from the 1700’s to the early 1900’s. We created a timeline to help in class.

Wednesday, February 5 – State of the School address in the gym
Thursday, February 6 – Book report due – Book talk – pick 5 things to put in a bag to discuss with the class, describing the characters, setting and plot of the book.
Specialists
Spanish – We learned daily routine vocabulary and practiced writing about our own daily routines.
Library/Technology – This week we read I Dont’ Care. We talked about our words and context, how what we says does matter. We wrote kindness grams to each other and put them on our library page. https://bit.ly/mkimacs
Art – Students created a composition featuring two or three overlapping figures inspired by the vibrant and bold style of William H. Johnson. They used positive and negative space to achieve balance and harmony in their artwork.
