Fabulous Fourth Grade Newsletter – November 17, 2023

Dear Families,

We had a wonderful time with our grandparents today! Below are just some of the pictures. Look at our class’s Facebook site for more pictures!

Thursday, November 30th, we are walking to and from Cornwall Park for our Salmon field trip, rain or shine! Please have your child/ren dress for the weather! They will also need a lunch they can carry. It will be stored at the field trip until we eat it.

After the break, I will be teaching the “Circle of Grace” curriculum required by the Archdiocese of Seattle to replace the “Touching Safely” curriculum that was required in the past. Fourth grade mostly focuses on Social Media and how to be safe in that arena. Let me know if you would like to know more about this or you would like to have your child sit out on these lessons.

I did not sent home your child’s Friday Folder due to using his/her papers during the conference next week. Speaking of conferences, your child is required to come. If you would like to have individual time, I would be happy to do that. Please indicate in the survey below. In order to prepare fully for the conferences, I need YOUR input as well. Please go here to fill out a survey giving me input on how you feel your child is doing for the beginning of this academic year. Please bring some non-perishables for the Human Food Chain (that will be on Monday) to your child’s conference! We are stockpiling in the foyer of the school! A list of what they really need is below!

Parent sign ups: Here is a Sign Up for volunteering on Tuesday or Thursday mornings for math centers. Also, here is a link for the Weekends with Pebbles Sign up!

Blessings,

Religion – Fourth Grade Theologians dove into the Cardinal Virtue of Fortitude which entails Perseverance, Patience and Magnanimity. Ask your child/ren what those big words mean!
Language – Fourth grade readers created board games reflecting the book. The students loved it and had fun playing each other’s games! In writing, we are planning for writing a story about “My terrible, no good, very bad day.” Spelling’s focus for this week was the oi and ou sound and what phonically makes that sound.
Math – Mathematicians finished chapter 3 with a test. After the Thanksgiving week off, students are going to be diving into chapter 4 which is about long division, the concepts of it at first, then the process of calculating them. If students do not know their multiplication and division facts by now, it is much harder for them. So, please support your child by testing him/her on these facts daily!
Science – We finished about sound. We have begun our next unit on salmon to prepare for our field trip!

Social Studies – We are learning about cultures and how our environment affects our culture.

November 20-24 – No school due to conferences (November 20-21) and Thanksgiving Break

Thursday, November 30 Field trip to Cornwall Park – Salmon Habitat

Human Food Chain is Monday, November 27th

Each year, we do a food drive for the Hope House in order to help stock their shelves before the winter. This has always been a great tradition at Assumption. Starting this week and through November 21st, please bring non-perishable food items to the front entrance where there will be tubs to place the food. Please do not bring glass containers or beans (they have enough of these). Hope House has asked specifically for the following “open and eat” items to support a greater need in the homeless population:

  1. tuna kits
  2. beans and franks
  3. fruit cups
  4. granola bars
  5. peanut butter crackers
  6. individual bags of chips/cookies

Dear Families,

Your children were marvelous today at the Veteran’s Day Prayer Service! The speakers have worked hard, and I am so proud of them! Thank you to the parents that also helped them prepare.

For next week, we will be evaluating ourselves in order to prepare for conferences for Monday and Tuesday, November 20 & 21. (If you still need to sign up for a conference time with me, please go here. ) Conferences will be with your child. In fact, for most of it, he or she will be leading it. If you would like to set aside time to talk only with me, I would be happy to do that. In order to prepare fully for the conferences, I need YOUR input as well. Please go here to fill out a survey giving me input on how you feel your child is doing for the beginning of this academic year.

Fabulous Fourth Grade Newsletter – November 3, 2023

Dear Families,

Wow! What a week! As a student said to me: “We had a lot of celebrating this week with Halloween, a birthday and a going-away party!” Why yes, we did do a lot of celebrating! Thank you to all the parents that sent/brought things in for it as well as helping put on the events! You are appreciated by my students and me!

Next week is not slowing down! We celebrating Vocation Week by listening to a Sister and a Brother and asking them questions. We had a great discussion as to what vocations are. We had parents that came for the party today share their vocations of marriage, being parents as well as their career they have been called to do. I invited students to ask their parents what their vocation is.

Thursday, November 6th is Veterans Day. Our class is responsible for it at 8:15 am. All scouts, please wear your uniform and accompany the Colors up the aisle. You are welcome to come. However, if you have a family member that is a veteran, please invite them. Either if they can come, they can’t come or they have passed away, we would like to honor them by creating a bulletin board with their picture and other information. Go to this link if you would like to do that.

Religion – Fourth Grade Theologians finished their Saints Power Points and many of them have presented them. We still have a few more to finish and present. We also learned about vocations to prepare for Vocations week next week.
Language – For reading, we are continuing to read My Father’s Dragon as a class, analyzing vocabulary, characters and plot. In writing, we focused on synonyms Spelling this week was the long o sound with: o, ow, and oa.
Math – Mathematicians have finished chapter 2, multiplying one digit to up to four digits. They have begun chapter 3 which is two-digits times two-digits. Next week, I will be teaching the concepts of how we get to the “regrouping” method. If students understand the concepts before they learn the faster method the success goes up. So, bear with us. We will get to the way that parents multiply! 🙂 If students do not know their multiplication facts by now, it will be much harder for them. So, please support your child by testing him/her on these facts daily!
Science – We are learning about sound waves and experimenting with various waves and pitches. Social Studies – We are learning about cultures and how our environment affects our culture.
