Hello 8S!
Baby is here! Mrs. Sherwood and I are so blessed to have received a healthy baby boy on the morning of the 25th. Thank you so much for all of the prayers for a safe delivery which truly have been answered.
His name is Cyprian (Sip-ree-ann) Jay Sherwood and he was born on September 25th at 3:50 in the morning with a birth weight of 8lbs 10oz. He was named after St. Cyprian of Carthage and my uncle Jay Sherwood. If you pay close attention during the Eucharistic prayer, at most Sunday masses, you will hear his name along with some other early church martyrs.
Mrs. Sherwood began labor at 10pm on the night of the 23rd, meaning that Mrs. Martin-Zender began subbing for me on Thursday the 24th. She has been doing a great job so far and I am sure the kids have been on their best behavior for her. Her last day will be October 23rd and my first day back will be October 26th. It is my goal to be as present to my family as I can during this time and may give delayed responses to emails. Since Mrs. M-Z is an hourly employee, she she will not be responsible for managing parent communication outside of school hours, and may not have time to get to your email during school hours. For pressing matters, it may be best to go through the office.

The 8th grade retreat is happening on October 20th at St. Joseph’s in Ferndale. We are still looking for parent volunteers to help! Please email Mrs. Blas if you would like to drive students to/from Ferndale, if you would like to supply food/beverages (nut-free & gluten-free options, please), or if you would like to lead small group discussions. The first two volunteer opportunities are drop off items, but the small group leader stays all day long. We will leave the school parking lot at 8:15 and leave Ferndale at 2:15 or 2:30. This will allow us to have enough time to get back to the school before the traffic loop opens. Some parents have multiple children to pick up, so it would be nice to get back to school before 3:00.
Tis the season to sign up for sacramental preparations. If your child is Catholic and is not yet confirmed, consider signing up for confirmation classes ASAP so that the gift of confirmation may be received! If your child and/or you are not Catholic and would like to inquire about becoming Catholic, now is the time for that too!
I invite you to carefully consider the next sacramental steps for your child. If you would like to learn more, please reach out to Daniel Prenosil (daniel@assumption.org). If you and your child already know that you would like to pursue confirmation or are seriously considering it, please sign up for a meeting with Daniel here.
PRIVATE TUTORING OPPORTUNITY
We are excited to share a wonderful tutoring opportunity with our ACS families! Ms. Natalie Zender, sister of our new Preschool Teacher/EDP Director, is offering affordable private tutoring for students in grades 3 and up.
Natalie is a lifelong parishioner of Sacred Heart. She graduated from the University Idaho with her Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering and Mathematics. She then went to work for the Navy as an engineer and is currently working for a private engineering firm in Burlington. Math and science are two of her favorite things, and she is excited to share that with the students! Natalie is also happy to collaborate with Assumption teachers to tailor instruction to each student’s individual needs and goals.
Natalie has completed all required Archdiocese qualifications to work with our students, and we are grateful to have this resource available to support our students!

This week in Orchestra, we are:
- Completing Orchestra Partner Instrument Tour Part 2, where student “coaches” teach new musicians how to safely handle their instruments, use rest and playing positions, the names of the open strings, and all about the bow, while practicing open strings and playing alongside an advanced part
- Reviewing tuning procedures to build independence and accuracy

This week in choir we are working on the Taize chant “Laudate Dominum”, the Baroque era choral piece “Cantate Domino” and various hymns for mass. We have also been working on vocal range exercises and learning techniques for singing high notes.

Next in ELA/literature, students will finish their Dialogue Stories, focus on sentence complexity in Writer’s Workshop, and continue reading The Running Dream.

This week we finished up solving linear equations. We worked on writing equations to represent real world situations, and reviewed for our test. We will have our first unit test on Monday, so please remind your students to review their notes over the weekend.
Engineering Elective (Mr. Sherwood)
Continuing the bridge projects
Science (Mrs. Ernest)
Students have been learning about Newtons as a measurement of force. Students have been doing materials testing to determine how much applied force is required to deform or permanently break different objects (aka noodles and crackers). Next week, students will take a test on the scientific method and review what we’ve learned about how mass and kinetic energy are related to damage in collisions. We will also practice the F=ma calculation. Reminder: students can correct most assignments for full points back and can correct tests for half points back. Check out this page for study tools: Science Supports
Spanish (Mrs. Santos)
Hello, families! This week in Spanish class, students practiced asking questions by speaking with me directly in Spanish, which helps them build confidence and get comfortable speaking. To support their learning, we will have short weekly quizzes to help students practice recalling vocabulary like days of the week, months, numbers, colors, and new words each week. Ask your child to show off their skills by asking you a question in Spanish at home!
Have a great week!
-Mr. Sherwood
