Hello 8S!
Welcome back to school, and welcome to 8th grade! We had a great first full week of the school year filled with fun, learning and prayer.
8S hosted mass on Friday the 4th, which was celebrated as a votive mass for the Sacred Heart. Our students did an excellent job showing reverence and love through their liturgical service, making the celebration that much more effective.
Curriculum night is this week! Please be in attendance so that you can learn about all of the fun offerings of 8th grade.
Tis the season to sign up for sacramental preparations. If your child is Catholic and is not yet confirmed, consider signing up for confirmation classes ASAP so that the gift of confirmation may be received! If your child and/or you are not Catholic and would like to inquire about becoming Catholic, now is the time for that too!

Baby Sherwood is due in a little less than 2 weeks and you may be interested to know my plan for when he arrives. I plan to take 4 weeks of leave starting when my wife begins labor. Fortunately, Mrs. Martin-Zender has agreed to return to fill in for me during this time. She will be the main point of contact for those weeks and will elevate things to me as necessary. Prayers for our preparation and a safe delivery are greatly appreciated!

Last week we went deep, searching for answers to overlooked questions about fractions and decimals. What does it mean for a fraction to be simplified? Why is it that we are able to simplify fractions?
Next week we will master the art of converting between different forms of rational numbers and begin performing operations on them.

PE (Coach Eager)
This week we went over PE expectations and procedures, then had a blast with a cooperative game called The Crazy Card Challenge, followed by some friendly competition in Circle Relays. We also talked about the power of connection — and how much fun it can be to discover things in common with people we don’t know very well yet. Great energy from this group!
Orchestra (Mrs. Varon)
- This week in Orchestra we are…
- Going over the syllabus, class expectations, and procedures for setting up and putting away the classroom
- Completing our Orchestra Partner Instrument Tour, where experienced musicians teach new students about their instruments to learn instrument parts, bow basics, instrument safety, open strings, proper playing and holding position, and how to safely put the instrument away.

ELA/Literature (Ms. Zech)
In ELA/literature, students received their new novels, The Running Dream, established purposes for their reading, took notes based on the author’s techniques that create impact, and completed a Writer’s Workshop on the focus of voice.
Next, in ELA/literature, students will share their notes in Book Clubs, reinforce Latin II words in Jensen’s practice, and work on hooks within Writer’s Workshop.

We learned some important physics concepts that bridge builders should know and began learning about different bridge designs. Next week we will begin initial planning of the bridge project.
