January 26-30 Newsletter (7S)

Happy Catholic Schools Week! This week, our school will be focusing on celebrating one group each day. Here is the breakdown:
Monday: Celebrate Teachers – Dress up as a Teacher
Tuesday: Celebrate Students – Students will get a special treat at winter ride
Wednesday: Celebrate Parents – Parents can join students for lunch at 11am
Thursday: Celebrate Community
Friday: Celebrate Alumni – Mass at 8:15, will honor distinguished alumnus

Semester 1 is in the books! I’m thankful for all of the hard work you and your child have put in this semester. Looking forward to another semester full of growth and learning!

Our Winter Retreat is coming together. As of now, most parents/guardians have responded more favorably to dropping off and picking up their child from Sacred Heart Parish Hall for our 7th grade retreat on Thursday, Feb. 19th. If this changes, I will reach out. More information regarding this day will be attached to the field trip forms that go home.

The Portland Trip is happening in May and, thanks to you, we have enough chaperones to accommodate for all of our 7th graders!

Monday-Friday, January 26-30 – Catholic Schools Week

Friday, January 30 – ACS got talent show

Last week in Math, we squeezed in a test on direct proportionality. We will move forward with indirect proportionality and percent change. Please find more here.

Last week in social studies, students shared WA State-based current events and reviewed chapter 13 through an Around the World game. This week, we examine how bills turn into laws and start an exciting World History unit on Medieval Europe.

This week in PE we had a fantastic day skiing, snowboarding and ice skating.  We also played an invasion game called “King Pin”.

This week in Orchestra we are…

  • Practicing the warm-up Sequence 4 to build finger coordination and accuracy
  • Working on Come and Join in the Carnival, focusing on staying together through syncopated rhythms and pizzicato playing, which requires careful listening and controlled plucking

This week in choir the students are working on songs that they’ve chosen for their project which is to prepare and memorize a song to sing in front of the class.  Some of the songs chose are:

-Do-Re-Mi from The Sound of Music
-Down By the Sally Gardens (Irish Folk Song)
-Seventy Six Trombones from The Music Man
-My Favorite Things from The Sound of Music
-Somewhere Over the Rainbow from The Wizard of Oz
-If I Were a Rich Man from Fiddler on the Roof
-Homeward Bound (Folk Song)
-The Bare Necessities from The Jungle Book

Still working on the new play.  It is finalized with the input of the students. Now, we will rehearse and hopefully be able to perform in front of an audience when finished.

Last week in ELA/lit, students completed their Jensen’s 6 quiz, met in Book Clubs, and wrote collaborative stories. This week in ELA/lit, students start Jensen’s lesson 7, finish reading The Outsiders, review test-taking strategies, and work together on a character biography project. Just a reminder that Book Reports (graphic novel focus) are due Thursday, January 29th!

Next week we will be discussing the parts of cells and learn more about mitochondria as the “powerhouse” of the cell.

They learned which vowels and consonants can be written twice together in a single word, for example: leer (to read), zoológico (zoo), diccionario (dictionary), calle (street), perro (dog); and which ones are never written twice in a word, such as: f, g, k, p, t.

This week in engineering we finished up our circuitry unit and semester by presenting machines that the students designed and built. The students were very creative and presented machines that ranged from submarine boats, DJ machines, teeth cleaners and iPad cars. Thanks for a great semester!

Students completed their sculptures with a focus on facial expressions and emotions, and worked on presenting their finished pieces. They also wrote artist statements reflecting on their creative process and how they felt about the final results. I had a wonderful time creating alongside the students and seeing their ideas come to life.

Happy MLK day!

This coming week is very short, with MLK day, winter ride and teacher workday reducing this week to only two days of instruction. Please also remember that this week is the final week of the semester – make sure to read the notes below from the teachers so that you and your student don’t miss any important end-of-semester information.

Prayer is very important and central to any Christian community. Prayer has been a part of your child’s education at ACS for as long as they have attended. However, we can sometimes become complacent in our prayer life, turning it into something automatic and even shallow. This week our class reflected on prayer with 3 simple questions:

1) What type of prayer do you pray most often?
2) What is your favorite way to pray?
3) How would you like to grow in your ability to pray/what ways of praying would you like to get better at?

I was very impressed by the depth and awareness demonstrated by your students’ answers and I found them to be a source of inspiration for myself. I encourage you to find time to continue these conversations at home so you can see the great spiritual depth that I get to see in them each day.

“I give praise to you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for although you have hidden these things from the wise and the learned you have revealed them to the childlike.”
Matthew 11:25

Auction Family Contribution Reminder: This is a friendly reminder that family contributions for our upcoming auction are due January 22nd. Each family is asked to contribute an item or service worth $200 ($100 for preschool families).

There are many ways to fulfill this requirement: donate a check to the office, provide an item or service, sponsor the auction, give through RaiseRight (see Angie King – this also counts toward your Scrip total!), collaborate with other families to host a dinner experience, offer use of a vacation home or AirBnB, contribute tickets to events, or create a themed basket.

Please remember to fill out the Procurement Form along with your donation so we can keep track of your contribution. If you have already chosen to be charged the $200, you will see that reflected on your February statement.

Questions? Please contact Jessica Rosetta at growinggreatkidsauction@assumption.school

Thank you for your continued support of our school community!

The Portland Trip is happening in May and, thanks to you, we have enough chaperones to accommodate for all of our 7th graders!

They will practice drawing molecular models to match chemical formulas, they will review exothermic vs endothermic reactions, and they’ll review which macromolecules breakdown into smaller molecules in our digestive systems. Students can find support materials here: 7th Grade Science Supports – ACS Seventh Grade. Next week, we will be doing Frog dissections! Students who do not want to participate are more than welcome to sit this activity out. Typically, all students start in the classroom and watch a video to determine how comfortable they are with participating. As students need breaks, they are encouraged to work on an alternative activity.

We continued practicing the definite and indefinite articles in their masculine form, both singular and plural: EL / LOS / UN / UNOS.

The students continued their exploration of circuits. This week they will need to give a 5 minute presentation on what they have discovered and/or created using the circuit modules.

Students are painting their paper mâché sculptures with a focus on base coats, shading, texture, and thoughtful color choices. This project emphasizes craftsmanship and realistic or intentional details, helping students move beyond cartoon-style work and toward more mature, high-quality art.

Have a great week!

January 5-9 Newsletter (7S)

Merry Christmas! Thank you all for the generous class gift you gave me and for your help with our super fun class party! Mrs. Sherwood and I have been snacking on the treats you gifted me throughout the break. I pray you all had a restful and festive break and that in some way celebrating Christmas this year brought you and your family closer to Christ.

Winter Ride begins this week on Tuesday, hopefully making the transition back to school a little sweeter for the kids. Please make sure you have read the instructions for winter ride carefully, and that your child brings everything he or she needs on Tuesday.

The Portland Trip is happening in May. Please reach out soon if you are able to chaperone and/or drive for this very exciting trip. We currently have enough parent volunteers to accommodate for only half of our 7th grade students. Please let Mrs. Ernest or I know if you can help.

Before the break, the students finished implementing their airplane designs and found out that the simplest designs worked the best. We only have 4 more meeting times. This week we will do a little reflection on the last unit and then with our last 3 class periods, we will work on introductory coding and circuits.

Students finished applying the papier-mache mixture and added final details to enhance texture and form. The next step in the process will be painting their sculptures.
The art room wishes all families a Merry Christmas and a joyful holiday season!

Students will be working on their final project for the rest of the semester.

We are moving full speed ahead in our Academic Decathlon preparations.  Students know what individual topics they will be studying and which they will study for the Super Quiz.  They will begin reading their books and studying over the Thanksgiving holiday.  We had a logic quiz last week and it went terrific!

Still working on the new play.  It is finalized with the input of the students. Now, we will rehearse and hopefully be able to perform in front of an audience when finished.
