Attention: The 7th grade retreat that was announced two weeks ago, will be moved to sometime in February due to Vocations Week. Thank you for those that have volunteered to be a small group leader. We will circle back to this after Christmas break.

Tuesday Tutoring: Tuesday Tutoring sessions will open again this week! If you’d like to take advantage of this extra support, please make sure your child is registered for EDP (by the day prior). Once that is done, you can sign up for tutoring here: Tutoring Signup

Monday, November 3rd – Winter Ride informational parent meeting at 7:00pm in the gym.

Last week in Math, we finished up our unit on rational numbers. Now your child is able to do addition, subtraction, multiplication and division on ANY rational number. This week we will start working on one of me personal favorit topics, equations. They will learn about different tools that help solve equations. Please check the math page for more info: Middle School Math Site

In social studies last week, students researched events leading to the Indian Removal Act of 1830, played Battleship to reinforce latitude/longitude, then compared Native American and 18th Century Explorer perspectives regarding exploration. This week, they have their next, open-book, quiz on Monday, October 27th which will cover the weekly questions/discussion notes since the last quiz (please check FACTS for the weekly assignments they should review from this time period, if unsure). Later this week, we will have discussion regarding Bellingham points of interest and an assignment provided for extra credit.

In ELA/literature last week, students drafted their spooky stories, performed skits to exhibit authentic voice, shared the first portions of their WA State novels in Book Clubs, and worked through Jensen’s lesson 3. This week, students finish up Jensen’s lesson 3 with a quiz on Thursday and discuss the next portion of their WA State novel with their Book Club group. Students will also gather peer feedback then edit/revise their rough drafts of spooky stories. If you see your child’s spooky story-writing, please encourage them to make the edits and revisions ON their rough draft so I can see their process (they have double-spaced their rough drafts to help with this). Any pre-writing will need to accompany the good copy (due this Thursday). A few students have offered to bring in bagged popcorn when they share their [flashlight] spooky stories Friday, October 31. If they have written this in their agenda and you cannot send them with popcorn, please email me (Ms. Zech)! There will be NO Cornell notes or reading log due this week, but please watch the homework calendar for any other updates!

In Science, we have begun to discuss how we can predict chemical reactions. Students are getting more familiar with the periodic table and will soon be able to explain how different elements interact and what products would be formed in chemical reactions. Students will also begin a project on the structure of atoms. Please be sure to check the homework calendar for upcoming quizzes!

This week in PE we reviewed the backhand and forehand frisbee throws, learned how to throw a leading pass (Throw and go) and moving to an open space.  We practiced these skills while playing games called “Uno, Dos, Tres Punto” and “4 Way Frisbee”.

We have been practicing how to respond to the questions ¿cuántos?, ¿cuáles?, ¿qué?: ¿Cuántos son los días de la semana?, ¿Cuáles son los días de la semana?, ¿Qué día de la semana es hoy?.

This week in orchestra, we are:

  • Beginning work on Banuwa, the traditional African folk song also known as African Noel.
  • Continuing our work in our pieces Voyager, Believe, and Arkansas Traveler.

We are working on hymns for our weekly mass, a Christmas medley for the Christmas program, and a Taize chant song for mass that will feature a number of soloists.

This week in the ACS Band classes, we are refining and polishing our patriotic tune ” America” for our Monday, November 10th performance at the ACS Veterans Day Prayer Service. Additionally, students received six short Christmas tunes in preparation for the ACS Christmas Program.

In Art Elective, students explored the creative world of explosions book! They learned how to transform a simple book into a dynamic 3D experience, carefully using space to tell a story. Each project connected art with storytelling inspired by Bible passages, allowing students to visually express meaningful messages and reflections.

This week in engineering, we started a new units on airplanes. We created 4 different types of paper airplane and compared measured characteristics about how they fly. Next week we will investigate further what about each design makes them fly differently. We will also learn about the physics that makes airplanes fly.

Have a great week!

October 20-24 Newsletter (7S)

My first Holy Hoops week was very exciting. It was so fun getting to see the students in a different setting, where their personality and gifts could shine in ways that I don’t get to see in the classroom. So that the students could feel free to enjoy themselves at Holy Hoops without looming obligations weighing on their conscience, homework last week was minimal. This week we will be resuming to a regular work load.

Monday, November 3rd – Winter Ride informational parent meeting at 7:00pm in the gym.

Last week in Math, we continued to study negative fractions, mixed numbers and decimals. We reviewed adding, subtracting and multiplying decimals. We took a quiz on Wednesday, giving the students a chance to demonstrate their mastery. They are learning to take their time with these types of problems. There are many small details to keep track of when doing operations on negative decimals, providing many opportunities to make a mistake. This Friday we will finish up this unit with a Test. Please check the math page for more info: Middle School Math Site

Last week in ELA/Lit, students reinforced vocabulary knowledge through Jensen’s lesson 3, practiced using figurative language to create My Life as a Metaphor, incorporated vivid imagery into their creative writing, and brainstormed about: “What makes the BEST spooky stories?”. This week, students continue working through Jensen’s lesson 3, meet in new Book Club groups to discuss the first portion of their WA State novels, and begin writing spooky stories! Just a reminder that Book Report #2 is due Monday, October 20! Book Report Guidelines can be found here

Last week in Social Studies, students moved around to practice latitude/longitude on the giant WA State map, learned about the Whitman Massacre, and started to discuss the Indian Removal Act of 1830. This week, students will play Battleship in partners to reinforce latitude/longitude and continue exploring territorial government. The next social studies quiz will take place on Monday, October 27th, so please make sure your middle-schooler is reviewing their notes on a weekly basis.

This week we talked about World Mission Sunday, that is this Sunday October 19th. We practiced how to tell the time, and they started memorizing the Prayer of Saint Theresa of Avila: NADA TE TURBE…

This week in orchestra, we are:

  • Continuing to rehearse the holiday song Believe, working on the middle section.
  • Learning Arkansas Traveler, a well-known American folk tune, and exploring layered parts and ensemble coordination
  • Practicing the warm-up Sequence 3, focusing on common finger patterns in ascending and descending order

We are working on hymns for our weekly mass, a Christmas medley for the Christmas program, and a Taize chant song for mass that will feature a number of soloists.

In photography class this week, we have been focusing our weekly practice on the compositional element of texture this week.

Inspired by the work of Raku Inoue and Hannah Bullen-Ryner, students created nature scenes using leaves, flowers, and other natural elements to design lighthouse collages. They focused on showcasing highlights and contrast to bring their compositions to life.

This week in engineering, we finished up our bridge project, putting a cap on our structural engineering unit. The students did a great job building suspension bridges out of string, wooden dominoes paper clips and paper. They learned patience as they had to rebuild their towers many times to get them just right. Next week we will be starting a new unit on airplanes. This unit will dive deeper into the physics side of engineering as we understand what makes planes fly.

Have a great week!
