Friday, March 24

It was an incredibly busy week, as we started off with two field trips, and an author/illustrator presentation, but students were flexible and we learned so much through it all. I really loved how we had perfect attendance this week too. My favorite days are when everyone is here 😉

Book Reports -Students turned in their choices this week and the directions for their choices are in their Friday Folders tonight. All reports are due by March 30th, but students can share them all week. Please do not have your children select a book for May, this one is a specific genre and I’ll talk about that next week and let you know.

Poetry Cafe -All mothers and grandmothers are invited to our classroom on FRIDAY, May 15th, at 2pm.

Friday, May 1st -Please have your child BRING ONE FLOWER for our Mary Crowning. Mass is at 8:15 if you want to join us.

If you have a Costco supply of Kleenex in your garage and can spare a box or two, third grade would love a donation. Thank you!

Academics

Literacy -Students covered the concept of cause and effect, read a true story about an African woman who helped plant trees, and we are learning poetry. Students are enjoying this unit and excited to share and publish their poetry in preparation for our Mother’s Day Poetry Cafe.

Math -This week students took their introductory fraction test and did quite well. I’m proud of them! We are moving into comparing fractions, ordering fractions, and eventually equivalent fractions.

Science -Students wrapped up their expert presentations on extreme weather. They worked collaboratively to create a presentation in either Canva or PowerPoint and presented to the whole class. They learned from each other and had fun with this.

Social Studies -Our field trip took us to the Whatcom Museum where we learned about the Coast Salish people. They toured a gallery, learned a lot of information, and then had a chance to do some hands on workshops, which is always fun. We will continue with other regions and tribes next week.

Religion – We learned about the Kingdom of God last week and how baptism brings us into communion with God. Concepts such as repenting, and the parables Jesus taught were some other pieces in the chapter. Next Friday will be our May Crowning so please plan on bringing a flower.

PE -This week in PE, we kicked off our gymnastics unit! Students got moving with a fun Swork It warm-up video—it’s free and easy to try at home with the whole family. We also practiced traveling across the mat, learned different types of rolls, kicks and cartwheels and explored individual balance skills.

Music -This week in music we are…continuing recorder practice and passing off belts, with students progressing at different levels, including one reaching brown belt; singing and moving to I’ve Been to London to practice teamwork, flexibility with partners, and moving together to the beat; playing Recorder Baseball to apply recorder skills by performing written patterns in a fun, team-based game.

Library -This week we read  Parrotfish has a Superpower.  Sorry to all the families whose kids may be grossed out about those pretty white beaches now due to Parrotfish’s superpower, haha.  To look at the story or other library activities, check out librarypage.
