Friday, March 28

What a week! Third graders worked hard and are in such a great learning grove right now. The book reports were amazing and I thank you for your support on these! One more week until Spring Break!

OUR MASS – Next Friday, April 4th is the third grade Mass. We have several readers who already have their parts. I’d love for your support at home in practicing these.

Book Reports -Students truly shined this week with their creative book reports. From comic strips to truck cakes and fruit necklaces, wow! At this point students should be looking for an April book. I’m challenging them at this point to be reading a book that is at their reading level. They should not be finishing their book in a week.

Academics

Literacy -Our new unit in reading incorporates weather and climate as it is cross-curricular. This week we read a poem about clouds, incorporating many adjectives and metaphors. Students looked at mental images and how to interpret metaphors. Our grammar skill is future tense verbs, along with adjectives and adverbs.

Math –Third graders finished the chapter on perimeter, with some critical thinking and problem solving. We took the chapter assessment and are ready to tackle telling time next week.

Religion -This week our focus was on the incarnation, the annunciation, and the nativity. It was a coincidence or “Holy Spirit Moment” that the solemnity of the Annunciation fell on the day we were covering that event in our book! We also talked a lot this week about kindness, integrity, and honesty.

Science -I have heard the students are sharing their new knowledge of predicting weather and determining the type of clouds with you! I LOVE to hear those stories of learning being taken outside the classroom.

Spanish –  They started learning 10 verbs: correr, cantar, reír, comer, dormir, saltar, leer, aplaudir, escribir and bailar.

March is flying by! These full weeks are allowing us to really dive into our learning, which I am really loving. This week we began with our Readers Theater and the students really impressed me! It is so fun to see how the end product comes together and how well they work together. What a sweet group this is!

Book Reports -Students should be wrapping up their books. Each student has turned in their selection and should have the written directions for their reports. These are all due on Wednesday, March 26th with the exception of the food selection. If students are bringing food they may choose any day of the week (24th-28th) to bring their item. These do not have to feed the class, however that is an option.

Monday Field Trip -We will be walking with the first graders to Mount Baker Theater to see Ada Twist, an educational show incorporating science. Please make sure you send your children with a coat and it will be regular uniform. A HUGE thank you to Shoff Orthodontics for sponsoring our class and making this field trip possible.

Academics

Literacy -We wrapped up our Unit in Benchmark this week with a story from a different characters perspective than last weeks. Students read in small groups and answered text dependent questions, which they are getting really good at! For grammar we focused on comparative and superlative adjectives and in writing we began a spring descriptive paragraph. Their writing is really coming to life with all these hyperboles, similes, metaphors, and idioms!

Math – Students progressed through the chapter on perimeter, which is challenging for many. We will keep at it next week and keep moving forward with our grit!

Science -Wow, the science fair was impressive. This week we marveled at all the hard work put into the projects. We also began learning about different clouds, and predicting the weather.

Religion -This week we began learning about this unit’s saint, Saint Catherine of Sienna. Our chapter is titled, “Our Savior has come, the Incarnation of Jesus.” How is your Lent going?

Spanish – This week they learned how to write numbers from 1 to 10.

Library -This week we read This is Not My Story! and talked about different genres.  We then practiced searching for books on our library website based on genre and finding those books with the call number.  Lots of kids found new books they normally wouldn’t have even known that we had. Yay!

Friday, March 14

Happy Friday! The third graders had a wonderful week and we accomplished so much! I told them I’m as happy as a clam that all our science boards are done and we are all ready for the science fair on Thursday. Can you tell what we are learning about? The meteorologists learned so much through this process and I was told more than once that they loved this. I know they can’t wait to show them off to you Thursday (6-7:30pm).

Enjoy some photos of our Thursday tradition -Think Outside the Box (TOTB). This week it was NOT a snowflake.

Academics

Literacy – This week we took a break from our Benchmark Reading with a fun Saint Patrick’s Readers Theater. Students got to pick their story and are performing for the PreKindergartners on Monday.

Math -This week we wrapped up area and began perimeter. This was a harder transition as students wanted to keep computing the area. We will continue to cover this concept however.

Religion -For Lent this week we went through and learned all the stations of the cross. Students created beautiful shadow illustrations with water color backgrounds to place around the school. We will be able to travel around and pray the stations together next week.

Science -We had the week to focus on an extreme weather that can occur in the city/state that the students were assigned. They did some research, wrote their paragraph for their boards, and some did slides. The fun part came when they got to display all their hard on the science boards.

Spanish – They learned about body parts: identifying them, the correct pronunciation and  write them.

Library -We read Ramen for Everyone.  We then continued to work on our class book Little White Dog.  We also spent some time working on our typing skills.  Students that brought books back also had the opportunity to check out new books.

Thank you for your contribution and helping your students learn about Almsgiving. We had a generous donation to bring up today after Mass.

Dates to Remember:

Green/White Free Dress -Monday, 17th

Readers Theater -Monday, 11am in the Gym

Book Orders -Due Monday

Science Fair -Thursday, 20th 6-7:30

Friday, March 7

Happy Friday! Another full week of learning and I feel like I enjoy this class more every week! They worked hard, cared for each other, and had fun learning in a variety of ways!

*MONDAY -Students are asked to bring clothing for their meteorologist photos. We discussed options and they should be in a bag or backpack.

*Book Order Forms -We are about to publish our third grade book and I truly love for ALL the students to have a copy. Simply go to https://studentreasures.com/preorder and use our Class Code: 86008307. These have to be ordered by 3/17/2025. There is an option to pay-it-forward and give a book to a classmate as well. They are a wonderful keepsake and thank you in advance!

*Science Fair Update- Meteorologists are busy supporting their claims, making five day forcasts based on data, and putting together presentations. This is all done in class with partners and will be displayed on Thursday, March 20th (6-7:30pm). We can’t wait to show off the boards!

Academics –

Literacy -This week students continued with figurative language, identifying hyperbole’s and idioms in text, looked at plot, and answered text evidence questions based on a fictional story, practicing PQPA. We even created our own idiom book for the classroom.

Math -Students focused on area this week. The new edition of this curriculum rearranged units and broke this concept out to several lessons. The students are doing amazing and I can’t wait to see them put it all together next week. We have about half of our class completely tested out of Xtra Math and some still working hard. Remember you can practice at home as well!

Religion -LENT! I love the liturgical year and we are off to a great start. If you need resources, Holy Heroes is a great place. We watch their daily videos and are currently learning about the Stations of the Cross. Next week we will finish our book and do an art project to display the stations around the school in order to pray them as a school.

*Families are encouraged to sign up for Family Bilingual Stations of the Cross on Friday, March 28th here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0E4BACAF2CA6FF2-55522967-march#/

Science -For the science projects, students have been paired and assigned a US city to collect data on precipitation and weather over time. They are making claims on patterns, developing inferences on climate and creating five day forcasts. We are on to the second portion, researching extreme weather in their area. Again, please bring clothing for a photo on Monday.
