Mrs. McClurg’s First Grade
Concepts Covered This Week:
Religion:
- We listened to the Gospel from Sunday and learned how to grow as followers of Christ.
- We continued our Lenten journey with Jesus. We focused on forgiveness this week.
- We learned that to forgive means to pardon or excuse.
- We learned that sin is to choose to do something that we know is wrong.
- We discussed how God loves us and is always ready to forgive us.
- We made some symbols of forgiveness to add to our Lenten suitcases.
- We participated in a Stations of the Cross Prayer Service lead by Mrs. Thomas’ fifth grade class. We visited the stations displayed in the school halls.
Language Arts:
- We started reading and writing words with the long “e” sound. We focused on words that follow the “ea” rule.
- We practiced writing words that double the final consonant before adding –ed or –ing.
- We read a story about a special gift, a reading race, a funny lunch, and a small, noisy house. These stories had many of our high frequency words in them.
- We used these words to write about the objects and characters in these stories.
- We practiced identifying the narrator of a story. We found that sometimes the narrator is a character in the story.
- We continued to work with the state of being verbs; is, are, was and were.
Math:
- We continued to review the words associated with algebraic sense; plus, minus, equal, whole, part and difference.
- We practiced writing number bonds. The numbers in the bond show us what to use when writing addition and subtraction facts for a fact family.
- We used this information to help solve subtraction problems.
- We practiced subtraction from a 2-digit number. We practiced taking away from the ones place. We used manipulatives, pictures, and number bonds to show this concept.
- We used these strategies to solve real world addition problems.
- We filled in our March calendar and weather graph. We are very happy to graph sunny days again.
- We counted to 120, representing the number of days in school by using a dollar coin, dimes, and pennies.
Social Studies/Science:
- We reviewed vocabulary words and pictures, then completed a unit test on US symbols and holidays.
- We practiced ways to use kind words to include a classmate in our play and games.
- We watched some videos of animals waking up from hibernation. We also noted that many migrating birds are beginning to return home.
Specialist Classes- Physical Education/Art/Music/Spanish/Library:
- In art we learned about proportion in drawing by creating a rabbit. We explored warm and cool colors and mixing techniques to paint our rabbits.
