Mrs. McClurg’s First Grade
Concepts Covered This Week:
Religion:
- We listened to the Gospel where Jesus taught us how to love.
- We shared our Saint reports and pictures with our classmates.
- We had a visit from the Sisters of Mercy. They explained their vocation and answered our questions. We learned that our guest speakers were teachers before becoming sisters.
- We participated in a prayer service honoring Veterans and a Mass honoring Grandparents.
Language Arts:
- We practiced reading and writing many words with the short sound of I and o.
- We practiced reading stories with high frequency sight words.
- We used these words to write sentences about fish, things found in the bay, frogs, and dogs.
- We read a poem about autumn leaves. We wrote out descriptions of the leaves we see in our neighbor and school ground.
- We read a story and poem about what a bear cub and a seed needs to grow. These are from the Benchmark Advance series.
- We wrote a journal story about what a baby bear needs to grow.
- We wrote greeting cards to our Grandparents.
Math:
- We continued to use the math vocabulary words; whole, part, difference, minus and equals.
- We practiced using models, pictures, number bonds and the number line to show what happens when we subtract one number from another.
- We practiced writing out subtraction sentences.
- We solved real world subtraction problems.
- We counted to 55, representing the number of days in school by using dimes and pennies, filled in our November calendar and weather graph.
Social Studies/Science:
- We learned that a veteran is a person who served in our armed forces. We discussed ways we could say thank you to veterans.
- We discussed ways that we can show respect and be responsible to our classmates.
- We participated in and completed the Circle of Grace Program. (This is the new Safe Environment program offered by the Archdiocese of Seattle.)
Specialist Classes- Physical Education/Art/Music/Spanish/Library:
- In art we finished our coffee cups project by adding patterns with oil pastels and painted the background with watercolors. We discussed how some lines can add movement and why watercolors and oil pastels do not seamlessly blend.
- In music we danced the 7 Jumps dance to actively listen and follow musical cues,
- practiced The Grandparent’s Day Song and performed at the Grandparent’s Day reception and keep the beat by bouncing a ball.
- In Physical Education, we are learning to dribble, shoot and pass a basketball.
- This week in Spanish, we practiced saying “Doy gracias”- I give thanks. We created a booklet of things we are thankful for to share with our families. We also practiced counting Thanksgiving foods!
- At the library, we listened to a Thanksgiving story and browsed the Scholastic Book Fair.
- In music we danced the 7 Jumps dance to actively listen and follow musical cues,
