Course Overview: K-5 Music Program
Welcome to our K-5 Music Program at Assumption Catholic School! Our music curriculum is designed to nurture a love for music, enhance students’ creative abilities, and support their overall development through engaging activities.
Kindergarten: Introduction to Music
- Fundamental Concepts: Explore basic musical elements like rhythm, melody, and dynamics through playful activities and simple songs.
- Musical Expression: Experience music through singing, dancing, and playing simple percussion instruments.
- Listening Skills: Engage with various types of music to develop an appreciation for different styles and cultures.
Grade 1: Exploring Rhythm and Melody
- Rhythm and Beat: Recognize and create rhythms using clapping, tapping, and drumming.
- Melodic Patterns: Introduction to simple melodies using vocal exercises and xylophones.
- Musical Stories: Engage with music through storytelling and movement activities to enhance understanding and enjoyment.
Grade 2: Building Musical Skills
- Instrument Exploration: Play a variety of classroom instruments, including drums and Orff instruments (xylophone, mellophone, and glockenspiel)
- Song Repertoire: Learn and perform songs from different cultures and traditions.
- Creative Expression: Compose simple melodies and rhythms, expressing individual musical ideas and demonstrating understanding.
Grade 3: Developing Musicianship
- Recorder Lessons: Introduction to playing the recorder, focusing on basic techniques and simple songs.
- Music Reading: Begin reading and utilizing musical notation and rhythms.
- Performance Skills: Develop singing and performing abilities through group and solo work.
- Music Appreciation: Explore different genres and historical periods of music, understanding music’s role in culture and history.
Grade 4: Expanding Musical Knowledge
- Ukulele Instruction: Learn to play the ukulele, including basic chords and strumming techniques.
- Advanced Rhythm and Melody: Explore more complex rhythmic patterns and melodic structures.
- Composition and Arrangement: Create and arrange musical pieces.
- Cross-Curricular Connections: Integrate music lessons with other subjects, reinforcing learning through interdisciplinary approaches.
Grade 5: Mastering Musical Skills
- Instrumental Variety: Utilize all previously learned instruments, including recorder, ukulele, world drumming, and Orff instruments (xylophones, metallophones, and glockenspiels).
- Ensemble Collaboration: Work together in small groups to create and perform musical compositions.
- Critical Listening and Evaluation: Develop skills to analyze and critique music, understanding its impact on society and culture.
