Homework Policy
Homework will be assigned Monday through Thursday. Parents should typically expect homework in math, English Language Arts (Spelling, grammar, and/or writing), and reading. Occasionally, homework will be assigned in religion, science, and social studies.
As noted in the handbook, your child should spend 45-60 minutes per night on homework. Homework should always be review/practice and never materials that students have not covered in class.
If your child cannot finish the homework within 45-60 minutes, please have him or her STOP! Then please put your signature on the homework with a brief note indicating the reason for stopping- that it was too much work, he or she ran out of time, there was too much frustration, etc.
Homework that has been modified by parents WITH a parent signature, is perfectly acceptable.
Also note that if a child asks for help and a parent teaches a child how to do it differently than “how the teacher teaches it,” that is perfectly acceptable as well.
Missing Classwork/Homework
When a student is absent from school due to an illness, he/she will be given the same number of days he or she was absent to complete and turn in missing work. It is the responsibility of the student to arrange for all make-up work.
Students can be given extra time to finish homework or projects if they have a written excuse from parents.
I will communicate with parents and students when work is missing.
Late Work:
I understand that sometimes things come up, and assignments may not always be completed on time. My goal is to encourage students to be responsible for their learning while also giving them an opportunity to turn in missing work.
Late work will receive a 5% deduction for each school day it is late. The maximum late-work penalty is 20%, meaning an assignment will never lose more than 20% of its earned grade because it was turned in late.
For example:
- 1 day late → 5% deduction
- 2 days late → 10% deduction
- 3 days late → 15% deduction
- 4+ days late → 20% deduction (maximum deduction)
Students are always encouraged to turn in late work rather than leave it missing. Even if an assignment is significantly overdue, completing the work is an important part of the learning process.
Late work may be accepted until the week before the last week of the semester.
If there is an unusual circumstance that prevents a student from completing an assignment on time, please communicate with me so we can make an appropriate plan.
