January math can be cold!

6th Math – Mrs. VonFeldt/Mrs. Evans & Mr. Sherwood
This week, in 6th grade math, we have begun working with percentage. This week we are learning to find the percent of a number. Students are bringing examples on how this is used in real life such as a 25%-off sale, scoring 95% on a test, or paying 8% sales tax. We have explored different strategies to calculate these values. On common practice is to convert the percent to its fraction or decimal form, and use multiplication. See the video below.

In 7th grade, we will continue learning about proportionality and how this relates to algebra. We will learn about inverse proportionality and percent change. We will see how to represent these relationships using graphs. See this video below about inverse proportionality:
8th Grade Math – Mr. Sherwood
This week, in 8th grade math we will continue working on exponents in chapter 3. We will learn about what it means when an exponent is not an integer.
Algebra – Mrs. VonFeldt & Mrs. Evans
This week in Algebra, students will be finishing up their study of inequalities. We have learned how to solve and graph inequalities in one variable and inequalities in two variables. Below is a good summary for review. The test will be next Thursday, January 22.
