October Newsletter 2018

Our first Halloween Party will be Tuesday October 30th @ 2:00 here in our classroom. Thank you to Mrs. Dennis, Mrs. Strayer, and Mrs. Wolf for helping put this party together!

Our first Service Learning Project Field Trip is Wednesday October s31st @ 9:30 Please have your child dress warmly and prepare for rain. Students will be wearing their handmade spider & bat hats along with the first grade class. We’ll return around 11 am.

We are emphasizing the “Fruits of the Spirit”. The month of October’s focus is on “Faithfulness”. Congratulations to Alyse Strayer and Erick Dennis for showing us how to be faithful servants each day.

The daily journal-writing prompts build students writing skills using narrative, descriptive, and opinion writing experiences. Students love to share their writing with the class. This gives them practice reading their writing out-loud in front of an audience. We started six trait writing the first trait we are focusing on is “Ideas” All students are progressing or meeting writing standards.

The DRA testing has placed students at their RAZ level, This is individualized for your student. Reading groups started on Wednesday. Your child has been placed in the Owls, Bears, Hedgehogs, Foxes, or Raccoons groups based on their instructional reading levels to help them learn and gain the skills they need to become proficient readers.

We are practicing IXL Math in the Computer Lab 2 days per week. All students are progressing or meeting second grade math standards! We have reached the mid-chapter checkpoint in Chapter Three of our Go Math Books Basic Facts of addition and subtraction.

We completed Spelling Unit 7. The spelling lessons are building student’s spelling power and linking spelling to word meaning. There are 12 base words and four additional *bonus words. All students are progressing or meeting standards in spelling.

Please look for your child’s orange folder on Wednesday for school announcements.  0n Friday your child will take home their red folder. This will have their color-coded behavior report, completed work for the week, & parent newsletter.

We have 12 students participating in this Mass. If your child does not have a part in the Mass next Friday, please be assured, they will an opportunity in January and again in May.

All Saints Mass is on Thursday at 10:30. Please have your students bring a Saint costume if they want to wear it that day. There will be no mass on Friday this week.

Curriculum Overview

The second grade uses the RCL Benziger Blest Are We text.  Students learn social and conflict resolution skills through our Second Step program.  The text focuses on belonging to the family of God, the Church through Baptism.  The second grade also focuses on the Sacrament of Reconciliation and the Sacrament of the Eucharist, however, a more in depth study is done through your individual parishes for parents and their children who will be receiving their First Reconciliation and First Communion.  We also look at the parts of the Mass.  If your child is receiving the Sacraments at Assumption Catholic Church, the dates and times will be in the classroom newsletters, the Wednesday envelope, and the parish bulletin.

There are two new prayers to learn this year:

O Jesus, through the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I offer you my prayers, works, joys, and sufferings of this day for all the intentions of your Sacred Heart, in union with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass throughout the world, for the salvation of souls, the reparation for sins, the reunion of all Christians, and in particular for the intentions of the Holy Father this month.  Amen

My God, I am sorry for my sins with all my heart.  In choosing to do wrong and failing to do good, I have sinned against you whom I should love above all things.  I firmly intend, with your help, to do penance, to sin no more, and to avoid whatever leads me to sin.  Our Savior Jesus Christ suffered and died for us.  In His name, my God, have mercy.  Amen

The second grade Literacy curriculum consists of a combination of subject areas that help the students learn new strategies and practice learned strategies in the areas of Reading, Writing, Grammar and Communication.  The texts we use are from a basal reading series by Scott Foresman. The spelling series we are using this year is tied to the Common Core curriculum using Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.  Each lesson helps students build spelling skills by using strategies related to spelling sounds and spelling patterns, linking spelling and word meaning, and mastering sight words that are not decodable. Students will also be engaged in Reading groups with the teacher using Read Well for Grade 2 using literature and informational books at their instructional reading levels. Second graders learn the writing process through using the Six Trait Writing Program.  The students brainstorm, draft, revise, edit, and then publish their final copy while practicing this form of writing.  They also do Writing Workshop to create writing of various genres.  Students will write using various types of poetry and three five paragraph reports. This too will be done with assistance from the teacher and will be targeted to meet students’ individual needs. Second grade students read silently daily and are read aloud to daily.  Students also read out loud to the teacher, a buddy, and/or class on a daily basis. Printing by a continuous stroke manuscript method is reinforced and practiced at the beginning of the year.  Cursive writing by a continuous stroke cursive method is introduced in January.
Reading, Writing and Communication Skills are practiced throughout the second grade curriculum.

This year, the second grade will GO MATH by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt publications.  The skills are taught, practiced, and reviewed through using manipulatives, work pages from the text, games, and problem solving strategies.  The concepts included in the second grade curriculum are, Addition and Subtraction Facts to 20, Two-Digit Addition computation with trading, Two-Digit Subtraction
computation without trading, Place Value through 999, Money through $5.00, Time to 5 minute intervals, Measurement, Geometry, Fractions, Three-Digit Addition and Probability, and a basic introduction to Multiplication and Division.  Our strongest emphasis will be on Number Sense and Addition and Subtraction.  Mastery of addition and subtraction facts to 20. A strong understanding of number sense is also expected to be mastered up to 1,000.

The second grade science curriculum consists of STEAM Design Challenges NGSS based on current Washington State Standards. The units are Earth and Space Science; Engineering and Design; Life Science, Physical Science. Students will be graded on individual and team rubrics.

In second grade, students apply their emerging understanding of civics, economics, geography, and history to their communities and others around the world. Students learn about how their community works as well as the variety of ways that communities organize themselves. To develop conceptual understanding, students examine the geographic and economic aspects of life in their own neighborhoods and compare them to those of people long ago.  Students apply the 7 principles of Catholic social teaching to their understanding of the world.  These principles are:  each person is sacred, each person is social, we care for creation, all people have rights and responsibilities, we take care of the poor and vulnerable, workers have rights; work has dignity, and solidarity is our call; we are the keepers of our brothers and sisters.  Students will research one country within our global community and write a 5 paragraph report.  We will be using the Scholastic News weekly magazines and printouts each week.
