Monthly Units

Romans 12:5 – 6 so we, though many, are one body in Christ and individually parts of one another. Since we have gifts that differ according to grace given to us, let us exercise them:

September  Sirach 30:16 No greater treasure, than a healthy body. No happiness, [greater] than a joyful heart.

All students gain understanding of expectations in the Physical Education learning space. Through tag games and Project Adventure games they learn to be safe emotionally and physically.  They also review how recess activities contribute to fitness and health.

September – National Cholesterol Education Month  Students play Cholesterol Tag to understand too much cholesterol can contribute to blocked arteries leading to stokes and/or heart disease. Your body needs cholesterol, produced in the liver, is important for building the structure of cell membranes and helps in the absorption of important nutrients.

October  Genesis 2:7 The Lord God formed man out of the clay of the ground and blew into his nostrils the breath of life.

K – 1 graders work to improve their jumping rope skills and in tag games improve their understanding of playing fair by staying in bounds, tagging appropriately, accepting being tag, cheering for all, and picking others.

2nd graders improve their ball handling skills of footballs and soccer balls.

3rd graders practice at becoming proficient at inline skating.

4th graders practice improving tennis skills while playing rally ball.

5th graders develop flag football skills for small sided games.

6th graders improve flag football skills.

7th graders practice safe and cooperative bicycling!

8th graders develop quick transition in the game of Rugby.

October – National Healthy Lung Month  Students play Chain Tag to understand if you smoke your lungs will be damaged and cause you to slow down.  To help avoid lung damage, stay away from smoking and 2nd hand smoke, and add indoor plants to your home to help purify the air. (Lung Institute)

November/December John15:12 Love one another as I have loved you.

K- 1st graders practice movement gymnastics with a focus on the balance beam.

2nd  and 3rd graders practice gymnastic skills on balance beam and floor to prepare a routine for demonstration in December.

4th graders practice archery.  They master the 11 steps to success of National Archery in Schools Program.  Bullseye!

5th graders work towards building 6 man stunts from 2 man stunts.  They learn to listen to each other for safety and success.

6th graders are working on specific wrestling moves for knowledge. They are blessed with expert instruction from our wrestling coach Devin Wolf.

7th graders work on precision practicing the skills of bowling.  They also learn the fast pace game of Team Handball.

8th graders gain deeper understanding of the game of basketball and respect for officials as they practice being officials.

November – Diabetes Awareness Month Diabetes is a condition that prevents the pancreas from making insulin. Insulin is the hormone that helps get energy (glucose) to the body.  Students will review how the pancreas works and are playing tag to simulate insulin getting energy to cells, so we can move! What is “added sugar”?

Fitness tests are preformed to determine fitness level.

January Genesis 1:31 God looked at everything he had made, and he found it very good.

This is the winter sports month for Middle School students.  Some practice ice skating skills and others ski or snowboard.

All students practice variety of rhythmic movements and dances.

4th graders danced on wheels ( inline skates)!

5th graders specifically learn contra dances.

6th graders learn a variety of moves to Square dance calls.

7th graders learn the Troika, Wooden Shoes and Latin American dances.

8th graders learn to Waltz and Swing.

February Colossians 3:23 Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men.

K, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders practice fundamental manipulative skills relating to volleyball and basketball.

4th and 6th graders practice basketball skills and use strategies in lead up games.

5th, 7th and 8th graders practice volleyball skills and use strageties in lead up games.

February – American Heart Month – focuses on promoting physical activity and healthy eating for a healthy heart muscle. Support the American Heart Association by participating in our Kids Heart Challenge.

March/April Psalm 141:3 O’Lord, set a watch before my mouth, a guard at the door of my lip.

K, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders practice fundamental striking skills relating to the racquet sports.

4th graders practice floor hockey skills.

5th graders practice inline hockey skills and play small sided games.

6th graders practice pickle ball skills and play doubles.

7th graders practice tennis skills and play doubles on full size court.

8th graders practice badminton skills and play mix doubles tournament.

March – National Nutrition Month NNM – focuses on the importance of making informed food choices. (Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics). Students will study the digestive system and review sound eating habits.  Visit

Fitness test are performed to determine fitness levels.

May/June 1Corinthians3:17 . . . for the temple of God, which you are is holy.

K, 1st, 2nd, 3rd graders practice striking skills relating to golf and baseball.

4th graders practice kickball and soccer skills. They also practice basic water safety.

5th graders practice lacrosse skills and strategies for small sided games. They practice casting in preparation to fish on a local lake.

6th graders practice safe and courteous biking skills.

7th graders practice speedball skills and stategies for games.

8th graders practice disc golf and golf swing.
