Music News ~ Week of February 10-14

*No School on Friday, which means all music classes will only meet one time this week, aside from Kindergarten.*

Kindergarten: This week, students are learning to aurally distinguish different non-pitched percussion instruments using claves, sandpaper blocks, triangle, cowbell, hand drums, and jingle bells. They are also reviewing all of the musical opposites we have been covering in class with the book Big Bear, Small Mouse and adding musical instruments to tell the story.

1st Grade: This week, students are actively listening to the piece Kangaroo by Camille Saint Saens and moving the changes in the music. They are also learning to read, sing, and use hand symbols for Solfege notes sol and mi. Solfege is a system of reading music notes that teaches the students to think of musical pitches in terms of intervals.

2nd Grade: This week, students are reading rhythms and sol mi do pitches, and  improvising on xylophones to the song I See The Moon. They are also playing an action circle singing game called Circle Round the Zero.

3rd Grade: This week, students are learning about meter and time signatures and are experiencing 3/4 time signature with the song An Austrian Went Yodeling. They are also hearing a professional yodeler, and learning about the technique and history of yodeling.

4th Grade: This week, students are learning a bean bag passing rhythm game to Yankee Doodle, learning how to count in a 6/8 time signature, and are passing off their Yellow Belts in Recorder Karate.

Orchestra: This week, orchestra students will review all of their music from the year so far. They will also be reading quarter and eighth note rhythms on their instruments, and doing left hand finger strengthening exercises. Homework- Essential Elements #73 Buckeye Salute, #78-#86
