Music News ~ Week of February 24-28

Kindergarten: This week, students are getting introduced to the difference between beat and rhythm and creating a visual representation of both with craft sticks. They are also singing solos and practicing matching pitch with the game song Kangaroo.

1st Grade: This week, students are practicing singing sol-mi singing patterns and hand symbols and reading eighth and quarter note rhythm patterns. They are also adding instruments to the song Aikendrum, and keeping a steady beat while playing partner game song Wishy Washy Wee. 

2nd Grade: This week, students are reviewing rondo form and improvising answers to a musical question. They are working on the song The Cat Came Back, and are reading in partners through all 5 verses and discussing the story of the song. They are also practicing naming the names of the lines and spaces on the music staff. 

3rd Grade: This week, students are continuing to reinforce and experience the 3/4 time signature and learning a challenging partner stick game for the Maori song E Papa. They are also singing expressively and learning the terms staccato and legato while singing the song Donkey Riding. 

4th Grade: This week, students are completing a rhythmic dictation with all of their learned rhythms from this year. They are also playing the notes BAG on their recorders, and adding more instrumental parts to the ensemble piece we are working on in class using recorders, xylophones, and non-pitched percussion. 

Orchestra: This week, students are taking a playing test for Ode to Joy. They are also getting new music for Appalachian Hymn. Students can find their instrument in the videos below to help them with their homework this week, and in their learning of the new piece.

Music News ~ February 17th-21st

Kindergarten: This week, students are actively listening to Kangaroo from the Carnival of the Animals by Camille Saint-Saens and moving to the music. They are also learning a game song about Kangaroos and solo singing as part of the Kangaroo game.

1st Grade: This week, students are practicing the sol-mi melodic patterns along with hand symbols. They are also reading quarter note, eighth note and quarter rest rhythmic patterns and playing them on non-pitched percussion instruments. 

2nd Grade: This week, students are learning the names of the lines and spaces on the treble clef staff. They are practicing my drawing the notes on the staff and by labeling written notes. They area also singing the song The Cat Came Back and discussing dynamics. 

3rd Grade: This week, students are exploring the 3/4 time signature by reading rhythmic patterns, and singing and playing the Maori stick game E Papa. They are also singing and creating movement to the song Donkey Riding. 

4th Grade: This week, students are reviewing reading the eighth and sixteenth note patterns (ti-ticka) with Let’s Catch a Rooster. They are also learning two new notes B and A on the recorder, and beginning learning the recorder part for an ensemble piece Dix Ans.

Orchestra: This week, students are continuing to work on playing and reading quarter and eighth note patterns with the piece Buckeye Salute. They are also working on left hand pizzicato and adding a third part to Georgia Railroad. At home practice is going to be crucial as we are adding more difficult techniques to our repertoire! Repetition and muscle memory will be the KEY to your success. Keep up the good work!

Music News ~ Week of February 10-14

*No School on Friday, which means all music classes will only meet one time this week, aside from Kindergarten.*

Kindergarten: This week, students are learning to aurally distinguish different non-pitched percussion instruments using claves, sandpaper blocks, triangle, cowbell, hand drums, and jingle bells. They are also reviewing all of the musical opposites we have been covering in class with the book Big Bear, Small Mouse and adding musical instruments to tell the story. 

1st Grade: This week, students are actively listening to the piece Kangaroo by Camille Saint Saens and moving the changes in the music. They are also learning to read, sing, and use hand symbols for Solfege notes sol and mi. Solfege is a system of reading music notes that teaches the students to think of musical pitches in terms of intervals. 

2nd Grade: This week, students are reading rhythms and sol mi do pitches, and  improvising on xylophones to the song I See The Moon. They are also playing an action circle singing game called Circle Round the Zero.

3rd Grade: This week, students are learning about meter and time signatures and are experiencing 3/4 time signature with the song An Austrian Went Yodeling. They are also hearing a professional yodeler, and learning about the technique and history of yodeling. 

4th Grade: This week, students are learning a bean bag passing rhythm game to Yankee Doodle, learning how to count in a 6/8 time signature, and are passing off their Yellow Belts in Recorder Karate. 

Orchestra: This week, orchestra students will review all of their music from the year so far. They will also be reading quarter and eighth note rhythms on their instruments, and doing left hand finger strengthening exercises. Homework- Essential Elements #73 Buckeye Salute, #78-#86

Music News ~ Week of February 3-7

Kindergarten: This week, students will sing the action song Chew Chew and add non-pitched percussion instruments to play the beat. They are also singing songs about trains (Down by the Station and Paige’s Train) and practicing the concepts of fast and slow. The exploration of the xylophone continues this week with the nursery rhyme Jack and Jill and students will discover the different types of mallets used on the instrument.

1st Grade: This week, students are taking a rhythm reading assessment for reading quarter and eighth note rhythms (ta and ti-ti). They are learning the action song Rig a Jig and will sing while playing the game that goes with the song. Students are also learning the spiritual Michael Row and will be using the song to sing with good singing posture. 

2nd Grade: This week, students are learning how to draw a treble clef symbol and learning what it means in music. They are also getting introduced to the lines and spaces of the staff, and practicing putting notes on specific lines and spaces in preparation to learning the note names. They will also be playing a bean bag toss game on a floor staff. 

3rd Grade: This week, students are playing a rhythmic cup game along to Favorite Rag by Scott Joplin using eighth and quarter note rhythms. Students this week are learning about the Lunar New Year, and learning a traditional Chinese new year song Gong Xi Gong Xi. Another new song this week is called Love Somebody, which will be used to reinforce sixteenth notes and rondo form.  

4th Grade: This week, 4th grade students will be passing off their Orange belt for Recorder Karate. The Orange belt uses a new fingered note, the high D. They will also be learning about the 6/8 time signature, and reviewing syncopated rhythms.

Orchestra: This week in orchestra, students will be working playing Ragtime fiddles at a faster tempo. They will also be working on playing eighth and quarter note rhythms by sight, learning the musical symbols for up/down bow and working on ensemble skills.
