Middle School Math Post – Week of May 13-17

6th Grade – Section A – Mrs. VonFeldt

This week we will finish Chapter 10. The students have used models to understand the basic area formulas for common polygons: specifically parallelograms, triangles, and trapezoids. We have used these formulas to find the area of other regular polygons and composite figures. In Chapter 11 we will continue our study of geometry with surface area and volume. Please see the link to the video below in Mrs. Evans’ post.

6th Grade – Section B – Mrs. Evans

This week our class will finish Chapter 10 in Go Math – enjoying finding polygon areas!    We have been using models to understand the basic formulas that we use to calculate area of parallelograms, triangles and regular polygons.  We will test on Chapter 10 on Tuesday and then continue our geometric studies beginning with the surface area of solid figures.  Below is a link to a Khan Academy which will help give a great perspective of solid figure (polyhedra) nets.  Please visit the video!

Pre Algebra (7th and 8th Grade) – Mrs. Evans

Pre-algebra returns from various trips – DC and Portland – to continue the study of probabilities.  All of our hat projects are due at the start of the week – these projects began with design of a hat for USE YOUR HEAD hat company, and then utilized statistical studies in order to set a price on the hats.  Finally we evaluated marketing data to be able to make conclusions about who to best market our hats to in order to have the greatest success.  We used proportional reasoning, dot and box plots and basic concepts like mean, mode and range in the process.  This project summarized all that we learned in our Statistics studies.

We move directly into the study of probability this week.  We will begin with experimental probability of simple events.  Statistics and probability are important studies – please visit this video to see a real life application in Lake Victoria.

8th Grade Math – Mr. Pryor

Eighth grade math studying scatter plots and deciphering correlations and lines of best fit.

Algebra – Mrs. VonFeldt

This week we will be working in Chapter 10 and will be discussing sampling methods and ways to analyze information. Students will learn to calculate mean absolute deviation and discuss what this can tell us about our data.
