Middle School Math at a Glance

6th Grade – Section A – Mrs. VonFeldt

This week we will doing a fun activity, using unit rates to compare prices for common grocery items. Students logged onto their IXL accounts and practiced ratio problems. Have your child challenge themselves with some word problems over the long holiday weekend.

6th Grade – Section B – Mrs. Evans

We will be working an fun activity this week, putting our new knowledge of rates, ratios and unit rates into practice.  We are adding IXL to our homework – 30 minutes each week.  This is a great place to improve the skills in which you are less confident.

Pre Algebra (7th and 8th Grade) – Mrs. Evans

This week, in prealgebra class, we will continue Module 5 in which we use percents to solve real life problems like sales prices and tax of a sale.  We are adding IXL to our homework – 30 minutes each week.  This is a great place to improve the skills in which you are less confident.   Also, keep in mind that all Module 4 assignments are due for late credit no later than Wednesday! ‘

8th Grade Math – Mr. Pryor

The 8th grade math class is reviewing chapters 1-4 this week. We will take it chapter by chapter to make sure all of the concepts are solidified. After these chapters are reviewed, we will be back at it with chapter 5.

Algebra – Mrs. VonFeldt

We continue to write linear equations in different forms. This week the students will use them to represent real world situations and solve problems. On Wednesday, we will put all previous concepts in play to solve a CSI mystery involving the ‘Mathemagicians.’

Middle School Math at a Glance – Week of Nov 12th

We hope your enjoyed your holiday Monday!  It was great to meet with families last week to look towards the upcoming year!  Here are some details of what we are doing in math this week:

6th Grade – Section A – Mrs. VonFeldt

This week we will begin Chapter 4, Ratios and Rates. We will begin by modeling ratios and finding equaivalent ratios using tables and equivalent fractions. We will extend our use of ratios by calculating unit rates. You can help your student by discussing rates as you move throughout the day – the speed the car moves and the cost per oz of different products in the grocery store.

6th Grade – Section B – Mrs. Evans

This week we will begin Chapter 4, Ratios and Rates.  We will begin with modeling ratios and considering what rates are used in everyday activities.   You can help your student by discussing rates as you move throughout the day – the speed the car moves and the cost per oz of different products in the grocery store.

Pre Algebra (7th and 8th Grade) – Mrs. Evans

On Tuesday of this week, we will review Module 4 (ratios, rates, unit rates, writing equations to describe proportional rates and graphing proportional rates) and do a take home test.  This take home test is open book, and calculators are allowed.  Encourage your student to think hard and big!  Here is a link, also shown last week, to help you if you have any difficulty with proportional relationships.

Algebra – Mrs. VonFeldt

The class is continuing to write linear equations. This week we will learn how to write an equation in another form: Point-Slope. Students should be able to take an equation in point-slope and rewrite it in slope-intercept or standard form, demonstrating that all of these can represent the same line.

Middle School Math at a Glance Week of Nov 5th

This week in Middle School Math, we are:

6th Grade – Section A – Mrs. VonFeldt

This week we are continuing with Chapter 3 where we are focusing on the coordinate plane, graphing points, identifying quadrants, and finding the distance between two points. There will be a Chapter 3 test on Thursday. Please use the links below in Mrs. Evans’ 6th grade news to practice skills from this week.

6th Grade – Section B – Mrs. Evans

This week we are continuing with Chapter 3, learning about the coordinate system, locating ordered pairs, reflecting them over the x or y-axis and finding distances between pairs.  We will have a test on Chapter 3 on Thursday.    Below are three links to practice pages on the skills we are learning in Chapter 3:

PRACTICE – IDENTIFYING POINTS ON THE COORDINATE SYSTEM

PRACTICE – QUADRANTS AND THE COORDINATES SYSTEM

PRACTICE – REFLECTING POINTS ACROSS AXIS

Pre Algebra (7th and 8th Grade) – Mrs. Evans

This week we will continue working on Module 4, in which we extend our understanding of rates and unit rates to the proportions.  We will learn to identify proportional relationships, define them by the equation y = kx and see what that looks like when we graph it.

Algebra – Mrs. VonFeldt

The class is beginning Chapter 4. This week we will write equations in slope-intercept form and use that relationship to solve word problems. Students will practice writing equations when given either 1) a graph or 2) any two points on a line. Use the link below to practice writing equations in slope intercept form in Khan Academy.

8th Grade Math – Mr. Pryor

The 8th grade math class has just finished up chapter 3 and had a small unit on math within biology and nature.  We will continue on to chapter 4, working with ratios, this week.
