Fabulous Fourth Grade Newsletter – September 27, 2024 Edition

Dear Families, September 27, 2024

We are done with MAP testing! Yay! Your children did so wonderfully! Thank you for your support on this!

Thank you also for the classroom “pencils” that some of you bought for our classroom. That was very generous of you. I will be putting them to good use!

I really like to teach math in small groups. I find children learn better when I meet them at their levels. However, I need your help. I don’t have any parents signed up yet to help with those small groups. Please click this link to sign up for a Tuesday or Thursday in the next few months!

This week’s book reports went very well. Your children were well-practiced and excited to share and learn about other books to read! Next week, students will be getting their next book for October’s book report. It will be a written book report that we do together on the day it is due. So, please just make sure that your children keep reading their newly approved books starting on Tuesday.

We had fun meeting our Pre-K Buddies for the first time today! Some of them were our siblings!

A weekend with Pebbles is here at this SignUpGenius.

Blessings,

Paula A. Martin-Zender

Academics

Religion – Fourth Grade Theologians finished chapter one on God’s Loving Plan. We also finished our first unit in the Second Step program. Next week, we will be discussing our “Circle of Grace” program which is required from the Archdiocese of Seattle. Fourth grade curriculum focuses on Social Media safety within that Circle of Grace. I will be sending home information about what we discussed in a week or two.
Language – Fourth grade readers began reading our book: My Father’s Dragon. We found the vocabulary words, and we are learning how to write responses to the literature questions. In Spelling, we covered the long e sound using ei, ea and ee. Finally in writing, fourth graders are going to be writing about our mythical creatures that we created both using fiction and information writing.
Math – Mathematicians are reviewing how to subtract big numbers. Keep practicing facts!
Social Studies – Historians learned about how our economy works. Words discussed were: needs and wants, supply and demand, incentives, income and taxes. We also covered how we can participate in our community to make it a better place.

Science – Scientists made final changes based on peer feedback on our STEM collaborative project creating a new mythical creature in the Maker Space. We are also writing a “news article” from a human’s perspective of a “sighting.” Meanwhile other students in the group are writing a story from their mythical creatures “point of view.” It is fun to see them in this multi-curricular and collaborative perspective writing!

Art – Bowl of Fruit Collage: Students designed symmetrical vases and focused on creating fruits, adding pastels to give them a sense of volume.

Physical Education – This week in PE we discussed the difference between muscular endurance and strength and the benefits of stretching.  We took the Fitness-gram push-up and flexibility test.
Music – This week in music class we are practicing changing pitch with the song Good Morning, and reviewing the notes of the treble clef.

Spanish – Students labeled the classroom with vocabulary words, and then played an eye-spy game to find all the classroom items on a list.

Library/Tech – We talked about being good digital citizens this week and how to find balance with our time in terms of devices.  We also practiced our typing skills.  https://acschool.edclub.com
