Mrs. McClurg’s First Grade 

October 11-14, 2021 

 Concepts Covered This Week:  

Religion: 

  • We listened to the Gospel story where Jesus asks us to share with others. 
  • We learned that God created the world and everything in it from nothing. 
  • We listened to part 1 and part 2 of the creation story  
  • We colored pictures of some of the things that God created.. 

Language Arts: 

  • We identified the items on a book’s title page. 
  • We read, then illustrated a poem about autumn leaves. 
  • We practiced reading stories with high frequency sight words. 
  • We used these words to write sentences about things that we can see at the farm or in our yards. 
  • We listened to story about leaves then wrote a journal entry about fall leaves.  
  • We practiced the correct formation of all letters.  We also practiced writing the beginning, medial and final consonant in words. 
  • We listened to many stories by Laura Numeroff and Felica Bond.  

Math: 

  • We identified and practiced using the math vocabulary words; whole, part, sum, addend, plus and equals. 
  • We counted on by using blocks and the number line to find a sum. 
  • We learned that you can add the parts (addends) in any order and still come up with the same whole(sum). 
  • We played games with number cards to practice our addition strategies. 
  • We counted to 31 with coins by using dimes and pennies. 

 

Social Studies/Science: 

  • We practiced ways to focus attention and follow directions so we can be successful learners.  
  • We reviewed the 6 parts of a plant 
  • We learned of different ways that plants protect themselves.   
  • We drew a protype (picture) of a structure to keep Goldilocks out of Baby Bear’s yard.  We used what we learned about plants to add protective features to our pictures. 

 Specialist Classes- Physical Education/Art/Music/Spanish/Library: 

  • In art we used paper and streamers to create spiders.  This activity required active listening and focus. 
  • In music we explored tone color (timbre) with the book, My Many-Colored Days.  We learned to convey mood using musical instruments. 
  • In physical education we learned how to toss and catch a ball and how to keep our bodies and equipment in control. We have had a great week of active listening and waiting for the music as a cue to begin. 
  • In Spanish we practiced reciting The Lord’s Prayer in Spanish. We learned words to describe feelings and emotions.  We also reviewed names for members of our family. 
  • At the library, we listened to a Halloween story and checked out 2 books of personal interest.
