Week 8- October 21-25, 2019

Concepts covered this week:

Religion:

  • We listened to Sunday’s Gospel story and learned that God answers our prayers and gives us what we need.
  • We participated in the Virtus safety program, learned about personal boundaries and how they change according to different people and situations.
  • We participated in an All School Mass.

Language Arts:

  • We practiced reading and writing short “a” words.
  • We completed writing descriptive sentences and listening center responses.
  • We practiced the concept of ending sounds and reviewed opposite words.
  • We wrote personal invitations to our grandparents for Grandparent’s Day.

Math:

  • We practiced using addition vocabulary words: add, add on, plus, equals, sum, addition sentence.
  • We used models, pictures and numbers to show additions sentences to ten.
  • We practiced the strategy of counting on from the largest number.
  • We learned that you can add two numbers in any order and end up with the same answer (commutative property of addition)
Social Studies/ Science
  • We continued to work in teams to build a barrier mimicking plant protection parts.
  • We tested of our barriers to see if they would keep Goldilocks away from the Bear’s house.  Some teams made adjustments to their barriers.
Physical Education/Spanish/Music/Art
  • In Physical Education we learned where the lungs are located and how to keep our lungs healthy.
  • In Music we learned that rhythms come from words in the song. We played the rhythm of  Today is Monday on instruments. We added creative body percussion motions to the story The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything.
  • In Art we learned about using cut paper shapes to make a whole-class art piece.
  • In Spanish we reviewed words and numbers with songs and repetitions with movement or class activities.We also learned about the tradition of the day of the dead.
Next Week:
  • On Wednesday, we will travel to St. Francis Care Center to share songs and cheer. Parents are welcome to walk with us. We will leave at 9:45AM.
  • On Thursday, we will celebrate Halloween with a class party sponsored by our parents.
  • On Friday, we will celebrate All Saint’s Day with the parish community.

Week 7- October 14-18, 2019

October 18, 2019- Concepts covered this week
Religion:
  • We listened to Sunday’s Gospel story and recognized the importance of thanking Jesus.
  • We listened to both versions of the Creation story.
  • We discussed and illustrated ways we can care for creation.
  • We identified people that help and care for us.
Language Arts:
  • We practiced reading and writing short “a” words.
  • We wrote literature responses in a complete sentence.
  • We identified rhyming words and familiar ending sounds.
  • We identified and illustrated words that describe other things.
  • We read and illustrated poems about cats.
  • We practiced reading more sight words and cvc words(words like nap).
Math:
  • We reviewed the math vocabulary words: whole, parts, add, add on and 1 more.
  • We had a unit review on number order and number bonds. We will continue to review these concepts.
  • We used pictures to tell addition stories.
  • We used the weather graph to show 1 more and 1 less.
Social Studies/ Science
  • We identified ways seeds travel and planted seeds at the school garden.
  • We designed individual prototypes, then worked in teams to build a barrier following the given criteria.
  • We participated in an earthquake drill.
Physical Education/ Spanish/Music/ Art/Computer Lab:
  • In Physical Education we practiced keeping our eye on the ball and manipulated balls with our feet. We improved shoulder strength through a variety of changing challenges.
  • In Spanish we reviewed directions with songs, practiced simple sentences such as “wait, again, please, help, repeat, etc.” We learned a new song about autumn, reviewed numbers 1-10 and the Sign of the Cross.
  • In Music, we played an Orff accompaniment on xylophones and glockenspiels for the song Bye Low Baby Oh, and sang Hey Betty Martin to differentiate between beat and rhythm.We also used popsicle sticks to tap our rhythms of the songs we know.
  • In Art we learned about different kinds of shapes, as well as reflection and monochromatic colors.We made monsters and fall landscapes.
Next Week:
  • We will practice reading new sight words: are, make, play, find, friend
  • We will practice and write new spelling words: at, cat, nap, sad, g
  • We will begin the Virtus safety lessons on boundaries.

Week 6- October 7-10, 2019

Concepts covered this week

Religion:

  •  We read about and drew pictures of our guardian angels.
  •  We learned about the job of a pastor from our special guest “Father Moore”.
  • We identified God as the Creator and illustrated things that were created by God.
  • We attended the Saint Francis Animal Blessing and learned how Saint Francis cared for and loved living things.

Language Arts:

  • We reviewed letter sounds and correct letter formation of all consonants.
  • We practiced reading many sight words in phonic reading stories.
  • We identified words in the –ut, and –up word families.
  • We wrote a realistic or make believe journal entry about taking a bath (Rosco took a bath in the dishwasher).
  • We listened to a story and responded to a literacy question in a complete sentence.

Math:

  • We defined and used the math vocabulary words; whole, part, number bond.
  • We broke a special number (whole) into two groups (parts) and learned that there are many combinations for the special number.
  • We practiced some problem solving strategies involving the words more or less.

Science/Social Studies:

  • We participated in a class election and voted dog as our favorite pet.
  • We reviewed and illustrated external plant parts.
  • We watched an interesting Ted Talk video, then made a class list of ways that plants protect themselves.

Physical Education/Music/Spanish/ Art/

  • In Physical Education we practiced passing, kicking and trapping a ball.
  • In Music we learned about melodic direction (high and low sounds, distinguished if pitches traveled up or down, sang in a low or high pitch) with the song High Low, and learned a xylophone accompaniment to Bye Low Baby Oh. We began to learn about the composer of the month, Antonio Vivaldi.
  • In Spanish we reviewed directions with songs, such as up, down, left, right. We learned communication in the classroom so that students can follow basic instructions in Spanish. We practiced greetings for different times of the day.
  • In Art we learned about reflection and warm and cool colors while drawing a landscape.
