Week 15- December 3-7, 2018

Concepts covered this week

 Religion:

  • We discussed the meaning of Advent and noticed the ways our room and the church were decorated for this season.
  • We wrote about some ways we are preparing our hearts for Jesus during Advent.
  • We practice our parts and presented a Mass to the Parish and School Community.
  • We practiced being an active faith-filled person who prays formally and spontaneously.

Language Arts:

  • We practiced reading and writing short “e” words.
  • We practiced saying and writing verbs with -ed endings.
  • We read realistic fiction stories about foods that animals eat.
  • We wrote complete sentences to answer literary questions.
  • We wrote a journal entry about what we like to eat with our families.

Math:

  • We completed the unit on subtraction and fact families to 10.
  • We reviewed the basic shapes that we mastered in Kindergarten.
  • We identified some properties of plain shapes such as: color, size, sides, corners and curves.

Science/Social Studies:

  • We wrote out and illustrated vocabulary words associated with season autumn changes.
  • We made a class circle map to indicated ways that we know that winter is coming.
  • We worked with a partner to make a book for Pip and Squeak to show they what they should do to get ready for winter.

Physical Education/Spanish/Music/Art:

  • In Physical Education, we practiced and performed a gymnastic floor routine to demonstrate mastery of movement and the ability to move smoothly from one skill to another with good body control.  Reminder, girls wear your modesty shorts.
  • In Spanish, we continued to practice house word by drawing and labeling our homes. Then we did “mini-libritos” or mini-books on the Posadas.
  • In Music, we prepared songs for the Christmas Program. We learned the importance of feeling the beat as a group, matched pitch and rhythm, and watched a conductor. We also learn basic conducting motions in 4/4 and 3/4 time.
  • In Art, we used crayons, markers, scissors, glue and paint to make decorations and gifts.

Week 14- November 26-30, 2018

Concepts covered this week

Religion:

  • We continued to discuss being thankful for the things that God has given to us.
  • We listened to a Gospel story where we refer to Jesus as Christ the King.
  • We discussed the colors and special season in the Catholic Church Year.
  • We participated in a K-8 School Mass.
  • We practiced singing Christian Christmas Carols.

Language Arts:

  • We practiced reading and writing short “e” words.
  • We practiced reading and writing words with l and r blends.
  • We wrote complete sentences to answer literary questions.
  • We read stories about ways we can help others.
  • We worked on a journal entry about ways we help out around the house.
  • We began to look for editing marks and self-correct our writing.

Math:

  • We continued to solve subtraction story problems, using number bonds and pictures.
  • We used number bonds to identify numbers that make a fact family. Then we wrote out the equations in the fact family.

Science/Social Studies:

  • We learned about some important national holidays.
  • We reviewed the vocabulary words: freedom, hero, landmark and national holiday.
  • We completed the unit on ideals and principles of the USA.

Physical Education/Spanish/Music/Art

  • In Physical Education, we began to demonstrate mastery of movement skills on the balance beams, and mats.  Moving smoothly from one skill to another with good control of body as the focus.
  • In Music, we prepared for the Christmas Program by practicing audience etiquette, performing for one another in class, and learning how to give constructive feedback to each other. We also reviewed rhythmic notation of quarter notes and eighth notes.
  • In Spanish, we continued working on the home by drawing and labeling our bedrooms. We also worked on adjectives and expanding our vocabulary
  • In Art, we drew chalk pastel depictions of Saint Nicholas.
  • In the computer lab, we began to explore the IXL Math program
