Week 12 &13, November 13-21, 2018

Concepts covered this week

Religion:

  • We discussed the Gospel story where Jesus tells us to share what we have with those in need.
  • We also discussed what it means to be thankful.
  • We identified actions and words that show we are thankful.
  • We listened to two Gospel stories that demonstrate being thankful.
  • We participated in a Mass and Prayer Service.

Language Arts:

  • We practiced reading and writing words with –s and –ing endings.
  • We read stories about ways we can help the members of our families.
  • We wrote listening center response sentences with a subject and a predicate.
  • We read all our sight words and learned to find a “just right” reading book.

Math:

  • We reviewed the math vocabulary words subtraction sentence, whole, parts and difference.
  • We reviewed strategies to solve subtraction problems.
  • We practiced listening to and making subtraction sentences problems.
  • We worked with partners on various problem solving techniques.

Science/Social Studies:

  • We explored the flag as a symbol or our country.
  • We practiced reading and reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.
  • We learned about the life of Pilgrim children by reading a news articles and watching a Scholastic News video.
  • We discussed the significance of Thanksgiving.

Physical Education/Spanish/Music/Art:

  • In Physical Education, we practiced movement on the bars, balance beam, mini tramp and mats.  We focused on safety and taking turns, sharing the mat and head “tucks” for forward rolls.
  • In Spanish, we continued to practice the Lord’s Prayer in Spanish, worked with differential articles and listen to the story of Alexander and his day.
  • In Music, we began to prepare for the Christmas Program.  We practiced our song, Away In A Manger. We discussed the lyrics, some vocabulary words and the importance of intonation when making music.
  • In Art, we took a line for a walk while learning about the qualities of line.

Week 11- November 5-9, 2018

Concepts covered this week

Religion:

  • We shared information about our Saints.
  • We learned that God created us to be good and holy.
  • We learned that heaven means happiness with God forever.
  • We participated in our school Veteran’s Mass.

Language Arts:

  • We practiced reading and writing short “o” words.
  • We worked on a narrative about our grandparents.
  • We wrote answers to listening center questions is a complete sentence.
  • We read a fiction and nonfiction story about a frog.

Math:

  • We used the math vocabulary word: subtraction sentence, whole, parts and difference.
  • We practiced solving subtraction problems by using the strategy of counting back with object, fingers and the number line.
  • We solved real world subtraction problems.

Science/Social Studies:

  • We read about Veteran’s Day and discussed people we know that could be veterans.
  • We learned that some symbols of the United States of American represent freedom.
  • We began to look at our flag as a symbol of our country.

Physical Education/ Spanish/ Music/ Art:

  • In Physical Education, we reviewed safety practices using mats for gymnastic skill development.
  • In Spanish, we practiced the Lord’s Prayer in Spanish, worked with differential articles and listen to the story of Ferdinand the bull.
  • In Music, we worked on our songs for the Christmas program. We learned singing techniques to sound our best such as correct posture, breathing and pronunciation. We also be reviewed audience etiquette.
  • No Art with Ms. Gottschalk this week.  Instead, we worked with children’s book illustrator, Luciana Navarro Powell.  We created crayon and watercolor pictures for Grandparent’s Day.

 

Week 10- October 29-November 2

Concepts covered this week

Religion:

  • We listened to Sunday’s Gospel story and learned that our eyes help us to see the beauty of all God’s creation.
  • We wrote reports about a saint and shared this information with our classmates.
  • We learned about many special saints.
  • We participated in an All School Mass.

Language Arts:

  • We practiced reading and writing short “i” words.
  • We wrote literature responses in a complete sentence.
  • We published a writing piece about Autumn.
  • We practiced reading more sight words and identified some visually similar words.
  • We read and listened to books about Halloween and Autumn.

Math:

  • We reviewed subtraction vocabulary words.
  • We used pictures and manipulatives to complete subtraction sentences.
  • We solved real world subtraction problems.

Social Studies/ Science

  • We went to the school garden and collected different kinds of seeds.
  • We tested our animal adaptions in an air bowling game.
  • We discussed and defined vocabulary words and associated with the early settlers in America.

Physical Education/Spanish/Music/Art

  • In Physical Education, we practiced jump rope skills for a final performance evaluation.
  • In Spanish, we looked and learned words for farm animals and the weather. in Spanish.
  • In Music, we finished our work on The Carnival of the Animals listening journals. We learned a song about spiders, and will use the song to learn about rhythm notation and how to tap it on rhythm sticks.
  • In Art, we created self-portraits using cut paper.
  • No Computer lab this week due to a special project for an upcoming event.
