Eighth Grade Newsletter

SLE Focus: A servant leader of Assumption Catholic School is a person of integrity who treats all creation with dignity.
+Language Arts: The eighth graders continue to learn about Latin-based vocabulary, roots, and affixes. Students are also writing a research paper for history class.
+Literature: Group Literature Circle projects are nearing completion and will be presented to the class.
+Mrs. Evans: We continue in the study of geometry as we calculate surface area of prisms and composite shapes and then move to calculating the volume of geometric solids. We will test on this module on Friday.
Mr. Pryor: The 8th grade math class starting chapter 7 on Monday. This chapter consists of combining like terms in algebra and practicing more complicated ways of solving multi-variable equations.
+Mrs. VonFeldt: We are using the grouping method together with the Zero Product Property to factor and solve quadratic equations. There will be a test on Chapter 8 on Thursday.
+Music: This week, students are starting a group project to create a musical skit in the style of the percussion group Stomp, using non-traditional instruments and creative rhythmic patterns. They are delegating jobs for each person in the group, and developing ideas for instruments.
+Physical Education: In Physical Education students will continue the badminton unit with instruction for understanding of the rules and practicing specific badminton skills in doubles games. SLE 3 An effective communicator who demonstrates growth in self-confidence and encourages confidence in others.
Students are to be active 60 minutes a day for good health. They will be tested on their fitness level beginning the end of April! Mile run, curl-ups, push-ups, flexibility. SLE 2 An engaged active life-long learner who is and independent, self-motivated learner.
+Religion: The eighth graders are learning about human trafficking while they create a Station of the Cross. Soon after spring break, eighth graders will be taking the Assessment of Children/Youth Religious Education (ACRE) test. They are living Lent by creating Prayer, Fasting, and Almsgiving.
Science: The 8th grade science students have just finished presenting our projects on energy types and simple machines. We are about to enter our unit on thermal energy.
+Spanish 8th grade worked on grammar and their video projects.
+U.S. History: Three groups are preparing for a debate on the Constitution while the other two groups will be studying about the movement west of the Mississippi River. The eighth graders are writing a research paper for a topic of their choice from the 1800s or 1900s.
