A reminder that yesterday’s Principal for the Day, Ms. Brumley, authorized Free Dress for ALL students tomorrow, Thursday, May 27th! Have fun while following the guidelines for Free Dress.

 

PTC News 

Fun Run and Annual Fundraising Update 

ACS students, teachers, staff, and parents…YOU DID IT! Together, we raised $26,077.20 at the 37th Annual Ellen Anderson Fun Run, breaking previous records and shattering our (stretch) goal of $20K! We are thrilled with this outcome and so incredibly grateful to everyone who helped in big and small ways, particularly our Fun Run Co-Chairs Natalie Milligan and Shannon Zebrowski. Thank you everyone for supporting this wonderful event. Please note that top earnings and raffle winners will be announced in next week’s news. Coupled with our auction, to-go dinners and numerous other fundraisers, the PTC was able to keep a balanced budget this year and contribute $162,500 to the school’s operating budget. Wow! 

 

We understand that this year has been a roller coaster for us all, and our students deserve some recognition for their flexibility, positivity, and diligence as we all work to navigate the changes brought about by the pandemic. To celebrate our wonderful students, the PTC will be bringing in the Sugar Shack Ice Cream truck to join in Field Day activities on June 15th. Each student will get to choose a treat on us from the Sugar Shack (including all 8th graders returning to help with the day). Stay tuned for more information about this fun year-end tradition and thank you all for an incredible, unprecedented year! 

  

Family Picnic To-Go 

Don’t forget to swing by the gym today (Wednesday) between 3-4 pm to pick up your ready-made picnic. Thank you to our Volunteer of the Year, Rob Viggers and his kitchen team lead by Lynette Machinski and Sara Rush for these delicious offerings this year!  

  

 

Last Call for Volunteers

Remember that May 31st is the deadline to submit volunteer hours through the volunteer portal. Unsubmitted hours will be billed to your FACTS account at the end of the school year. 

 

We had a large donation of used uniforms that need to be laundered, brought back clean, and put away. If you could use a couple of fundraising volunteer hours and would like to help, please email Mrs. Dennis: ddennis@school.assumption.org.

 

If you would like to get a jump-start on volunteering for next year, consider signing up to lead one of our fantastic fundraising or community-building activities. Some roles we still have available include: 

  • Spaghetti Dinner Co-Chair (September)
  • Grandparent’s Day (November)
  • Movie Night Chairperson (Multiple Dates)
  • Used Unform Sales (Multiple Dates)
  • Ski to Sea Parade (May)
  • Scrip Sales (Ongoing)
  • Fun Run Co-Chair to learn the event and take over in 2022 (May)

Health Screener and Playground Angel Volunteers 

We’re in the home stretch! Please dig deep and sign up wherever you can. We truly rely on these positions to have our students here safely. Thank you in advance for your support!  

Please note: In addition to paring down to two Health Screeners each morning, we’ve restructured our lunch recess times in order to have fewer kids on the playground.  The schedule is: 

 11:25-11:55 2nd-4th grade 

11:55-12:25 5th-8th grade 

12:25-12:55 Kindergarten and First Grade 

Please pick two half hour shifts in order to get your full volunteer hour. Thank you!

Library Book Return 

It is time to start rounding up any books checked out from the school library. I sent home a list of all books currently checked out to your child(ren) in today’s parent envelope. All items are due back by Friday, June 4. If there are any items not returned by the end of the school year, you will be billed a replacement fee. Free Swim Lessons for Kids this Summer 

Assumption graduates, Nathan and Noah Chen (who have been swimming competitively for 8 years with the Bellingham Bay Swim Team), are offering free group swim lessons this summer with the help of one of their swim coaches. The lessons are open to children from 6 – 10 years old and will be every Monday and Wednesday at 2pm in July and August at the Lynden Forge pool starting on July 7, 2021. There are currently two spots left and sign up will be on a first come first serve basis. Please email Nancy.1.chen@gmail.com if you are interested. 

 

 

Support for the Salcidos

Many thanks to the families who have gifted the Salcidos with SCRIP and financial support. Our community continually rallies when one of us is hurting. Please feel free to send items of support for them through the office anytime.

Staffing Updates 

As we hire people into the vacant positions, Mr. Anderson hopes to update families in the Wednesday Newsletter. Please direct people you know to our website if you think they would be a good candidate for any of the open positions. We’ll keep this post open for future weeks and update you here. 

Hired: New Third Grade Teacher- Beverly Williams; Office Assistant- Jessica Sidhu; Gary Green- Maintenance 

Hired: Development Director- Shannon Zebrowski (Seventh-grade mom and Fun Run Coordinator for the past two events) has accepted the position for the 2021-2022 school year.  

Change in status: After an outpouring of support from teachers and parents, Mr. Marc Costanza has reconsidered his resignation and has agreed to stay on in his current position for next year. We are thrilled with this decision and grateful for his continued service to the students and to the school. 

Finalizing a hire this week– EDP Director, Physical Education 

Still waiting on candidates– School Counselor, Activities Coordinator 

Seventh and eighth grade– Mrs. Eusebio will be the leave replacement for Mrs. Reyes in eighth grade to start the 2021-2022 school year for language, literature, religion, and social studies; and Mrs. Demry will be the seventh-grade leave replacement for language arts and literature to start next school year.    

 

 

Meet the School Commission 

Natalie Milligan, SC Parish Liaison – year two. Natalie is a lifelong Catholic and Whatcom County Native. Her baptism, First Communion, and Confirmation were here at Church of the Assumption, and she was one of the first girl altar servers! She was active in the Newman Center at WSU and the University of Otago in New Zealand where she became a Lector and Eucharistic minister.  Prior to the pandemic, Natalie was a lector and her son, Rhys (7th grade) an altar server at the 10:00 Sunday Mass. She enjoys sharing God’s word and building strong community bonds. As Parish Liaison, she strives to bridge our school community with the faith communities at the various parishes throughout Whatcom County. 

 

 

Friday, May 28th 

3rd-5th grade students should plan to wear their dress uniform this Friday for School Mass. Parents of children in participating grades are also welcome to attend/sit with them. Only students attending Mass in person need to wear dress uniforms, and regular uniforms for all other grades. Peacemakers will be announced this Friday.
