As expected, cases have been climbing rapidly since December 30th and the current seven-day average is twice what it was when we gave this update a week ago. The unvalidated case count in Whatcom County is now at 440/100,000 residents through January 10th (https://www.whatcomcounty.us/3427/COVID-19-Data). Still, the Health Department uses multiple data points to make decisions for businesses and schools. The Health Department submitted a media release today which provides helpful information about where in the county the cases have been occurring.
We trust that families are doing everything they can to limit social gatherings and interactions outside their immediate households. The probability is now significantly higher that we would have a case inside our school, but we still trust with our mitigation strategies that transmission would be limited and at the least, a cohort may need to quarantine for 14 days. With a three-day weekend coming, we know you may be inclined to spend more time with extended family and friends. For the month of January, it may get worse before it gets better but we continue to remain hopeful for a decrease in case counts. Your communication with us and with the Health Department is extremely important, so thank you for continuing to notify us if anyone in your family is showing symptoms of if you have been around anyone who has tested positive for COVID-19.
2020 Parent Survey Results
Thank you to everyone who participated in the parent survey last November. We are so grateful for the feedback. Many of the things that happen in our classrooms and on our campus are a result of parent suggestions. Please take a few minutes to review the testimonials and to see how this year compared to previous years’ data. We still have areas for growth, but we’ve also come a long way with improvements. You can access the survey summary here.
Protecting God’s Children Class
Current “Protecting God’s Children” training and background check are required for all volunteer positions. Church of the Assumption is offering the training on January 30, 2021, at 9:00 am via Zoom. Please sign in to virtusonline.org to enroll and contact Angie King at firstname.lastname@example.org with any questions.
For parents looking for counseling for their children during this challenging time, WWU offers free tele-mental health counseling sessions with graduate students (supervised by faculty). If counseling is not offered with your insurance, this could be a great way to support your child’s mental health at this time. See the flyer for more information.
Health Screener and Playground Angel Volunteers
Please help us fill several remaining vacant spots in January! Check out the link for responsibilities and openings.
We are so grateful for the support Health Screeners and Playground Angels bring to our students and Duty Teachers. Please keep in mind that we count on these safety roles when you sign up, and last-minute deletions send us scrambling for help. If you must cancel a sign up, please email Jessica Sidhu at email@example.com so she can try to find a replacement volunteer.
Donate a set of drums
Mrs. Beshara has been finding creative ways to teach music since the students are not able to practice singing. She would love to purchase a class set of drums so that students may learn rhythm and percussion. Each set of seven drums costs $230 with tax and we need one more set to have enough for a class. If you would like to purchase a full set or donate a portion of the cost, please email Mrs. Beshara directly for more information at firstname.lastname@example.org. Thanks in advance for your consideration and generosity!
Friday, January 15th
3rd-5th grade students should plan to wear their dress uniform this Friday for School Mass. Parents of children in participating grades are also welcome to attend/sit with them. Only students attending Mass in person need to wear dress uniforms, and regular uniforms for all other grades.
