HOT LUNCH TOMORROW! 

Just a reminder that due to last week’s weather, January Hot Lunch will be held tomorrow, Jan 23rd. 

We’re still in need of help with prep, serving and clean up.  Please sign up for a shift if you’re able!  The continued success of our Hot Lunch Program is only possible with enough volunteers to keep it running.  JanuaryHLsignup.com 

 

 

Early Release this Friday

January 24th is an Early Release day (11:45 dismissal) with casual uniform and there will be NO school Mass.  If you need EDP and have not yet signed up, please contact Bev Williams as soon as possible: bwilliams@school.assumption.org 

 

 

Your invitation to the Growing Great Kids Auction and Gala went home in today’s envelope! We sold out last year, so please RSVP early and consider putting together a table of your friends and family to join you! If you did not receive an invitation or would like another to give to a friend, we have plenty of extras in the office. We can’t wait to celebrate with you all on March 7th! 

REMINDER: Procured (donated) items are due in the school office this Friday, Jan 24th. Any family who has not met their donation obligation ($200 value or higher) will be charged $200 via their FACTS account on February 1st. Thank you for doing your part to make this critical fundraiser a great success! 

 

State of the School on February 5th at 7 pm 

Some families missed this important event in the 2018-2019 school year, so please mark your calendars that this is a required evening for Assumption families in Pre-K through 7th grade. Mr. Anderson reviews successes from the current school year, shares continued goals from the Strategic Action Plan, provides a financial update, and explains context for a tuition increase. Childcare is provided so that at least one parent from each household can attend. It’s important that everyone in our community shares in the long-term health of our school, so thank you for making this a priority. Please email Mr. Anderson if you have questions or concerns. Enrollment packets for the 2020-2021 school are given this evening so that families can secure a space in the class by the March 1st deadline when spaces become available for new families. 

 

Explanation 

School Choice Week is a national celebration for families who have chosen Catholic schools like ours, other independent/private schools, public schools outside of home zip codes, and homeschooling. Selecting a school is the most important decision we can make for our child(ren)! This week is also a great time to start conversations with friends and neighbors, about how our schools have changed our lives. 

1) Scarf Contest! 

Grab a cheery, yellow, fleece scarf (outside of Mrs. Dennis’ office); snap a photo of your child or of your child with school friends; and e-mail theoffice@school.assumption.org to have it posted to our school Instagram and Facebook pages. Or, post it yourself to the hashtag #schoolchoiceweek2020 You might see your pic on Assumption’s Facebook/Instagram accounts!  Bonus points if you snap a pic of your child and his/her and seventh or eighth-grade buddy, wrapped in these festive scarves! Winner of the contest receives a $10 gift card to Dairy Queen, McDonald’s, or Subway. 

2) Yard Sign Contest! 

Grab a yard sign (outside of Mrs. Dennis’ office), stage creatively, take a picture, and e-mail to theoffice@school.assumption.org or post it yourself to the hashtag #schoolchoiceweek2020. Your pic might be posted on the school’s Facebook/Instagram accounts! Winner of the scarf contest also receives a $10 gift card. 

Note: Photos are also welcome even if you don’t give permission to post to social media. Send the photo, write “Do not use for social media post,” and it may end up in the yearbook or on our new tv display in the entryway but not on the web. 

 

 

What is Catholic Schools Week? This is a week celebrated across the country and organized by the NCEA (National Catholic Education Association) to promote the wonderful things about Catholic education. It happens in January because this is the month in which new families begin looking to enroll for the upcoming school year. See the list of events and activities going on throughout the week. All parents of PS through 8th grade students are invited to any of the activities listed, but parents are particularly encouraged to come and share a bag lunch with their children on Tuesday, January 28th. (Note: See the next announcement regarding the Open House on Sunday, February 9th.) 

Monday- Honoring Human Life in our Community 

  • Parents are invited to the assembly for organizations that support families in Whatcom County. Assembly begins at 10 am in the gym. (Some of these organizations may include: Whatcom County Pregnancy Clinic, Family Promise, and Skookum Kids.)

 At the start of CSW, bins will be placed in the entrance way to collect new items for parents of babies, adopted or foster children. We will collect these items throughout the week and distribute them to these organizations.  

  • Each class will be responsible for making cards to give to new mothers or parents of an adopted or foster child. These cards will have a prayer or scripture verse stating the importance of human life. 

Tuesday- Honoring Parents and Families 

  • Students get to appreciate and thank their parents today for the gift of Catholic education.
  • Parents are invited to have lunch with their children in the classrooms this day. We will have one lunch time at 11:30AM followed by an extended recess time from 12:15 to 12:45 pm. Students bring a bag lunch or parents provide the lunch when they arrive.

Wednesday- Honoring Faculty, Staff and Vocations 

  • Students are asked to think of a person who has inspired them through their vocation of service. They may dress as this influential person today (modified free dress). Teachers will allow for a time during the day for students to share their thoughts about the chosen person and his/her profession.
  • Parent Teacher Club provides lunch for teachers today.

Thursday- Honoring Students 

  • Students may wear pajamas or clothing representing a college today (modified free dress).
  • Buddy Class Activity- From 1:45-2:45PM, classes will buddy up and spend time doing and activity together. The activity is the choice of the teachers involved. Suggestions include: buddy reading, an art project, games, movie, etc.
  • Buddy classes will be: K-8, 1-7, 2-4, 3-5, PreK-6

Friday- Honoring Alumni and Variety Show 

  • We will participate in a Mass honoring our Distinguished Alumni at 10:45 am. All parents are invited to attend. Peacemakers will also be honored and the theme is kindness this month.
  • Variety Show “rehearsal” will begin in the gym at 1PM but all parents are invited to attend. A snack will be provided for the students by the PTC. The final performance of the Variety Show will be at 7 pm in the gym for those parents who couldn’t make it during the day.

 

Open House on Sunday, February 9th  

Following Catholic Schools Week, the school will open its doors on Sunday February 9th from 2 pm to 4 pm specifically to welcome prospective families. Current families are invited to attend, meet next year’s teachers, and see student work. Current families are also encouraged to invite a prospective family to see the school. Families that attend (and sign in at) the Open House on February 9th will receive credit for one volunteer hour of service, AND… families who bring another family to the Open House for a visit will receive credit for two volunteer hours- one for attending and a second for bringing a friend. If you have any questions, please email Mr. Anderson directly. We hope to see many of you here on February 9th. 

 

Parent Led School Mass  

On Friday, February 7 at 10:45, the parents will lead the School Mass.  

We will need parents serving as a reader for the Welcome, Lectors for the First Reading and for the Prayers of Intercession, gift bearers and greeters. The School Choir will sing at this Liturgy.

Track and Field Coach Wanted 

ACS is seeking a coach for the upcoming Track and Field season. 

  • Season runs from mid-March through mid-May 2020. 
  • Team will practice most weekdays after school from 3:30 to 4:30 pm. 
  • Seeking someone with knowledge and enthusiasm for Track and Field who can create and enforce a safe environment both physically and emotionally for everyone in the program. 
  • Position offers the head coach $500 for first year, $750 for second year and $250 for an assistant coach.

Help Send the 8th Grade to Washington DC 

Reminder:  The 8th grade Value Village clothing drive is currently on!  Collect items listed below and drop off in the school foyer through Thursday, Jan 23rd (extended due to snow days). Please share this message with your family, friends, co-workers and neighbors. Additional collection bags are available at the school office.

Archdiocesan Overnight Summer Camps 

Did you know that the Archdiocese of Seattle has the oldest Catholic summer camp program in the country? Our Archdiocese has been helping our young people experience faith and fun in the outdoors each summer at our CYO camps since 1950. 

This year, Fr. Moore (who was a CYO counselor in 2010 and 2011) is trying to send a large group of Assumption students down to experience the joy of Catholic camping with other campers from all across the Archdiocese. If we can get enough campers on the same week, the Archdiocese will even send a bus up to Assumption to pick up and drop off our kids. We are looking at July 27 – Aug. 01, Aug. 03 – 08, or Aug. 10 – 15. If you would like to send your child to CYO camp this summer, and have a preference for a specific week, please let Fr. Moore know at frmoore@assumption.org. Once we pick a week, Fr. will be advertising it to the parish and the school as Assumption Week at CYO camps. Hopefully, Whatcom County campers can all go together, so that the friendships they develop there can continue when they return home.

PTC News 

Schools around the area have embraced Sunnyland Elementary after the sudden horrific loss of their Principal over the Christmas break. During the month of January PTAs around Bellingham are adopting a day and are providing lunch, snacks, drinks and/or comfort items to the faculty of Sunnyland to show our support and love! On Wednesday, January 29th the PTC will provide lunch to the Assumption Catholic School Staff in honor of Catholic Schools Week. We will be providing a fajita lunch and are in need of some side items to complement the meal: Teacher Lunch SignUp. Thank you for supporting our amazing Teachers! 

  

Non-Fundraising Commitment Hours:  

We need our parents to pitch in and help with playground duty the last week of January. Those volunteer hours are going to sneak up fast! Please come out and keep our children safe! January Angels
