Wednesday Parent Newsletter 9.4.19

Posted in Principal's Newsletter

In this week’s newsletter, you’ll find sacrament preparation info, upcoming Protecting God’s Children classes, Spaghetti Dinner info, a need for Scrip Sellers, Auction news, PTC News and various ways to support our school, Girl Scouts informational meeting info, transportation forms and important upcoming dates.

Parent and Emergency Contact Data

As you’ve heard, the system our school uses for tracking student data has recently changed the way contacts are managed.  Some of this information didn’t transfer into the new system, so we want to ensure that all parent and emergency contact information is accurate.

If you haven’t already done so, please return the family form you received last week in your envelope on Thursday. Thank you for your assistance!

Welcome, Archbishop Paul Etienne

It was announced on Tuesday morning that Archbishop Peter Sartain has retired and Archbishop Etienne is the new Ordinary. Please join the school and all those throughout the Archdiocese of Seattle in praying for the success of our new Archbishop.

Sacrament Preparation

Please see this week’s Wednesday Parent Newsletter for information about First Eucharist and First Reconciliation at the Church of the Assumption. Remember that if your child is a student at Assumption, he/she is not prepared in the school for First Eucharist. The Archdiocese requires that children also do preparation in their home parishes. If you would like more information about this, please contact your parish office this month.

Protecting God’s Children Class – for any parent wanting to volunteer in the school!

Saturday, September 14, 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., School Library

Thursday, October 3, 6:30 pm – 9:30 pm in the Teachers’ Lounge

Any adults 18-years and older who are looking to volunteer in the School or with any parish ministries serving children or vulnerable adults must take this course if they have not yet done so.   You cannot volunteer until you have taken this class and completed the background check.  If you miss this class, then you will need to find another class, most of which are in the Seattle area.

You must register online before attending the class— the number of spaces is limited.

Please go to www.virtusonline.org, click first time registrant, click Begin the registration process, and then click Seattle, WA Archdiocese on the drop down menu.

From there you will create a user name and password and select the class that you want to take.

You will need to take a class so why not do it here at Assumption!

If you have taken this class before you do not need to attend, however you will need to take an online class to continue your ministry with youth or vulnerable adults.  If you have questions, or need help signing up, please contact Angie King at 360-733-6133 or aking@school.assumption.org.

Huge thanks to everyone who answered the call to sign up!  We’ve had a super response, but still need more volunteers- particularly to serve dinner, wash dishes and donate baked goods.  To sign up to help or check that your info is accurate, please open: Spaghetti signup 2019

We’re very excited to share that our 8th grade students are partnering with the PTC again this year to help fund their class trip to Washington D.C. You will see them serving, helping sell desserts, busing tables and selling raffle tickets.  We plan to work them pretty hard, so please come out to support both our school and the exceptional students of this class!

Here’s where we could still use some help:

  • BAKE!  Please consider making cakes, pies or anything whole for families looking to split at their table or take home. You’ll earn a volunteer hour credit for this effort.  We can never have too much dessert.  Whatever is left will be offered for sale after Masses on Sunday.
  • PLEASE BUY TICKETS!  You’ll find an order form in this week’s physical envelope home. Tell extended family, neighbors and co-workers!  Our event has been added to our school Facebook page, so please like it and share!  https://www.facebook.com/AssumptionEagles

It is with sadness that the PTC announces that we must look for a new PTC Vice President for the 2019/2020 school year. The Strayer family has received an amazing job advancement and as many of you know will be moving to Chicago this winter. With that Shanae will need to transition out of her role from Vice President and hand over her duties to another Assumption parent who is just as excited and passionate about our school and mission!

VP duties are:

  • Supporting and working with the President for one year prior to taking office
  • Assist the President and carry out the President’s duties in his or her absence or inability to serve, including attending executive and general board meetings
  • Promotes the participation of the entire school-wide community
  • Assist the president in developing the agenda for general PTC board and general meetings
  • Work with the outgoing PTC board to facilitate the leadership transition
  • After completion of the one-year elected term, the Vice President will automatically assume the office of President the following year

Please think about this, discuss it with your family and pray about it. It is a very worthwhile commitment to your school community and a very rewarding one at that. If you are interested, please send an email to Sara Rush at sara.m.rush@gmail.com and cc Shanae Strayer at shanaeastrayer@gmail.com by September 13, 2019

WINNER: Congratulations to the Schuman family for winning the raffle for free pizza every Pizza Monday for the school year! Thank you to all the families who graciously signed up to volunteer at all the exciting events that are happening at Assumption!

Assumption Welcome Signs!

If you are a new family to Assumption or your child just started in kindergarten, you were welcomed to the school by a sign in your front yard (if you gave permission to share your address). We want to thank Bev Williams for this wonderful idea and to her volunteer helpers. Thank you, also, to the PTC for helping to share the cost of the signs. We plan to use these every year so please return them if you still have them at home.

Girl Scout Meeting

Girl Scout troop 46484 which meets at Assumption is considering expansion!  If you have a girl in grades K-5 who is interested in joining our troop, please plan to attend a parent info meeting on September 12th from 6-7:30pm in Room 1 (located below the parish offices).  This meeting is for parents only.  In order to have enough informational material, please text Tiffany Schuman (troop leader) at 360-739-2742 to let her know if you are planning to attend.  Hope to see you there!

Bus Riders, Walkers, and Bikers

  1. Please fill out the attached form if your child is riding the bus this year.  Bus Rider Form.  So far, we have the following families riding the bus:
  1. If your child will be walking or biking to/from school, please fill out this form(survey) so that we can have record of this for the office and for teachers to know who has permission to do so. Bikers/Walkers Form

Traffic Loop reminders

Remember that the speed limit is 5 MPH inside the traffic loop. Please help us to keep children safe.

Also, please remember to enter the parking lot before and after school from the Virginia St. side of the school, and exit on the Kentucky St. (Bellingham H.S.) side of the school. This helps with flow of traffic, especially while construction is going on at the Hope House.

This year students walking or riding their bikes are encouraged to leave the school through the gate to Cornwall behind the cross.

Parent Handbook and Family Directory

Hard copies of the family directory will be coming home at the end of September. However, you can access a digital copy of the Parent Handbook 2019-2020 on the school’s webpage under Parent Resources–> Forms and Documents.
