2019-2020 Paperwork Packet – DUE June 14th!
All the paperwork needed to start next year is in your parent envelope today. Please note that some forms are per student. The office compiles this information over the summer to be able to start the year updated and correct! Please fill it out and return before June 14th… sooner is even better!
Volunteer of the Year Award – Please Vote!
In this week’s digital newsletter, you will find a PDF document with narratives related to each of the volunteers who have been nominated. Please use the narratives to help you vote for the one nominee you think is most deserving of the “Volunteer of the Year Award” for the 2018-2019 school year. We’ve also listed previous winners of similar awards in that document so that you can know who has won in the past. However, a nominee may receive the award in multiple years and winning another similar award does not exclude him/her from earning it this year. Please cast your vote by clicking here:

Fun Run Update
What at WILD Fun Run It Has Been! Together students, families, faculty, sponsors and pledge donors raised an incredible $19,244.53 for our school smashing our goal of $15,000! WILD Results Indeed! Thank You!!
And the Winners Are….. Pizza Lunch = Mrs. Thomas’ 4th Grade Class with 100% participation and $3,825 in pledges! Well Done 4th Grade! Popsicles and Recess = Kindergarten, 1st Grade, 2nd Grade, 4th Grade and 8th Grade for 100% participation. Thanks to each class for contributing to our school! Top Pledge Earner in the School goes to Cooper Treat who turned in $638! Way to Go Cooper! Free Dress: Those students who brought in $100+ in pledges will receive Free Dress Coupons in this week’s envelope to be redeemed on Monday June 3rd and 10th.

Audio/Visual Installation- Volunteers Needed
Great news… The equipment has been ordered and the installation of the new A/V equipment in the gym will happen between Monday, June 24th through Thursday, June 27th. Thank you to parents– Mike Harbick and Andrew Cramer, for making this happen. If you still need volunteer hours and you have expertise in the trades (electrical, construction, etc.) or you know someone who does, we need you! Here are the jobs we are looking to complete. Please commit to at least two of the four full days so that we know we can count on you. Thank you, in advance, for your help! Email Mr. Anderson or Mike Harbick at

- Install three electrical boxes for the system, projector, and screen.
- Hang the screen
- Mount the projector to the beam on the ceiling of the gym
- Lisa Cornwell will be the kindergarten/first grade teacher’s aide and lunch duty from 8:30 to 12:30 pm each day. Mrs. Cornwell’s most recent experience was as Director of Youth & Family Ministries at Christ the Servant Lutheran Church in Bellingham. She has also done environmental education with 4th-6th graders, Vacation Bible School, and supervised youth programs for middle school and high school. She will be a wonderful addition to our duty schedule, knowing how to organize activities for all ages.
- Rita Hawkes will be the preschool teacher with Mrs. Beshara and Mrs. Lawrence from 12 pm to 3:15 pm each day. Mrs. Hawkes will also be working in EDP after school. She is a parent of a sixth grader at Assumption this year (and a fourth grader coming next year) and has worked in a Montessori preschool in Seattle. Mrs. Hawkes has glowing recommendations and we are excited that she will be a part of this program next year!
- Samantha Ernest will be the new middle school science and 7th grade religion teacher next year. Mrs. Ernest has a B.S. in Biology and is completing her M.S. in Biology from WWU this spring. She has been an active part of the Sacred Heart and Assumption communities, working with the EDGE and Life Teen programs to teach lessons around Catholic catechism. She has been a Graduate Teaching Assistant in Biology and has also been a T.A. for undergraduates at WWU. She has glowing recommendations from all the professors with whom she’s worked. She will be completing her teaching certification while working full-time at Assumption in 2019-2020.
- Cristina Pavon will be the new K-8 Spanish teacher for next year. Senora Pavon has been the long-term sub for us, filling in for the end of this school year. She is well organized and has a great rapport with students. She taught Spanish in Mexico to heritage speakers for four years before moving to the U.S. with her husband in 2017. She will be completing her test to become a Washington State certified teacher this summer.
Holocaust Writing, Art, and Film Contest Winner!
Maddox Aquino in fifth grade was awarded second place in the 5th/6th Grade Writing Category for the Holocaust Writing, Art and Film Contest. They received hundreds of entries from schools throughout the region and his entry was reviewed by a panel of judges and selected as a winner! Maddox and his family have been invited to the Awards Ceremony on June 2 at the Holocaust Center for Humanity in Seattle. Congratulations, Maddox, for your hard work and determination. Library Book Return
It is time to start rounding up any books checked out from the school library. I will be sending home a list of all books currently checked out to your child(ren) in today’s parent envelope. All items are due back by Friday, May 31st. If there are any items not returned by the end of the school year, you will be billed a replacement fee. Century Link Grant awarded to Anna Whelan
Assumption Catholic School was recently notified that it is a winner in the CenturyLink 2018-19 Teachers and Technology Grant Program, which recognizes innovative science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) projects in the classroom. Thanks to Anna Whelan for her application and focus on the iHatch-Chickens project that will upgrade the iPads in her classroom next year.
The $5,000.00 grant received by the school is part of $750,000 awarded by the CenturyLink Clarke M. Williams Foundation across 34 states this year, funding 180 classroom projects. Assumption Catholic School’s winning grant application was selected from approximately 1,300 total submissions. (Click on the attached pdf file for more information.)
Volunteer Appreciation Tea and Volunteer of the Year on Friday, June 7th
This award will be presented on June 7th at the reception beginning at 12:30 pm. Mark that date on the calendar for recognition of ALL volunteers this year. You are invited to bring a sack lunch and eat with the children at 11:30 am, followed by the Volunteer Tea at 12:30 pm (hosted with desserts from the teachers!). Stay for the Variety Show beginning at 1 pm that same day. We hope to see everyone there.
Last Box Tops for Education Contest This Year! DUE JUNE 3RD!
This year Assumption has earned $696.40 for our Box Tops submissions. Thank you to everyone for making this happen, it is an easy way to get money (10 cents for each one) for our school and students.
Our goal is $1,000 so if each classroom collects 340 Box Tops before June 14th (lofty goal but we challenge you to make it happen!) we will make our goal! Ask family, friends and others to clip and collect! Let’s see what we can do! Turn your Box Tops in at the office in a ziploc or envelope with you name on it. Mr. C’s class won a pizza party for the last contest… happening in June! Congratulations!
Make Jesus Day Camp the “MANE” Event this Summer!
This epic African adventure engages the whole herd. At Roar, kids explore God’s goodness and celebrate a ferocious faith that powers them through this wild life. July 8-12 from 9:00A.M. – Noon. at St Joseph, Ferndale. Here is the link!

June 13th– Peace Festival from 12:30 to 3 pm. All grades K-7 participate in team-building games. Parents are invited to watch and help supervise the games.
