In this week’s envelope, you’ll find information on:   New Hires, Century Link Grant, Student Ambassadors, Volunteer Appreciation Events, Fun Run, Root Beer and Brats Fundraising Hours, Box Tops, Vacation Bible School in Ferndale, Student Portraits, Fred Meyer Scrip, Common Threads Garden, Summer Youth Programs, Volunteer Opportunities, PTC News and Volunteering, Calendar Items. Also included are the Hot Lunch order form (last one) and Help Sign up form.

New Hires: 

We are excited to announce that the preschool/teacher’s aide position has been filled and it was split into two part-time positions for the 2019-2020. 

  • Lisa Cornwell will be the kindergarten/first grade teacher’s aide and lunch duty from 8:30 to 12:30 pm each day. Mrs. Cornwell’s most recent experience was as Director of Youth & Family Ministries at Christ the Servant Lutheran Church in Bellingham. She has also done environmental education with 4th-6th graders, Vacation Bible School, and supervised youth programs for middle school and high school. She will be a wonderful addition to our duty schedule, knowing how to organize activities for all ages. 
  • Rita Hawkes will be the preschool teacher with Mrs. Beshara and Mrs. Lawrence from 12 pm to 3:15 pm each day. Mrs. Hawkes will also be working in EDP after school. She is a parent of a sixth grader at Assumption this year (and a fourth grader coming next year), and has worked in a Montessori preschool in Seattle. Mrs. Hawkes has glowing recommendations and we are excited that she will be a part of this program next year! 
  • Samantha Ernest will be the new middle school science and 7th grade religion teacher next year. Mrs. Ernest has a B.S. in Biology and is completing her M.S. in Biology from WWU this spring. She has been an active part of the Sacred Heart and Assumption communities, working with the EDGE and Life Teen programs to teach lessons around Catholic catechism. She has been a Graduate Teaching Assistant in Biology and has also been a T.A. for undergraduates at WWU. She has glowing recommendations from all the professors with whom she’s worked. She will be completing her teaching certification while working full-time at Assumption in 2019-2020. 

Century Link Grant awarded to Anna Whelan 

Assumption Catholic School was recently notified that it is a winner in the CenturyLink 2018-19 Teachers and Technology Grant Program, which recognizes innovative science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) projects in the classroom. Thanks to Anna Whelan for her application and focus on the iHatch-Chickens project that will upgrade the iPads in her classroom next year. 

The $5,000.00 grant received by the school is part of $750,000 awarded by the CenturyLink Clarke M. Williams Foundation across 34 states this year, funding 180 classroom projects. Assumption Catholic School’s winning grant application was selected from approximately 1,300 total submissions. (Click on the attached pdf file for more information.) 

Calling All Student Ambassadors! 

If your child is a current 5th-7th grader and would like to be a student ambassador for the 2019-2020 school year, please fill out the application (hard copy) in your Wednesday Envelope this week. Applications are due Friday, May 24th to Ms. Gottschalk, Mrs. Blas, or Mr. Anderson. 

 Volunteer Appreciation Tea and Volunteer of the Year on Friday, June 7th 

If you misplaced your nomination form for the Volunteer of the Year, please print one from the link. If you have someone in mind, please fill it out and return by next week. This award will be presented on June 7th at the school mass at 10:30 am. Mark that date on the calendar for recognition of ALL volunteers this year. You are invited to bring a sack lunch and eat with the children at 11:30 am, followed by the Volunteer Tea at 12:30 pm (hosted with desserts from the teachers!). Stay for the Variety Show beginning at 1 pm that same day. We hope to see everyone there. 

Fun Run Update  

As of Tuesday, we have raised $14,600.53!!  With a few days to go, we are within sight of our $15,000 goal!!  Fantastic Efforts Everyone!! 

We are in the home stretch of the Fun Run and there is stiff competition between the classes for prizes! Currently the 100% participation class is 1st Grade ($1,719.03)!! Hot on their heels is Kindergarten 95% ($1,803.50), 5th Grade 94% ($1,247.00) and 3rd Grade 93% ($926.00).  

Top pledge money classes are 4th Grade $2,912.00 (80% participation), 7th Grade $2,272.50 (81%) and 8th Grade $1,780 (92%).   

Each class with 100% participation will receive popsicles and extra recess! The class with 100% participation and brings in the most pledge money will win Pizza Lunch for the whole class on Tuesday, May 28th.   

The LAST DAY to turn in pledges to count towards prizes is this FRIDAY, MAY 17th!  The last Fun Run T-shirt Day is Monday May 20th. Students who bring in $100 or more in pledges will earn Free Dress on Monday June 3rd and 10th.

The Raffle Drawing and Prizes for Top Earner in each grade will be held next week! 

Root Beer & BratsFUNDRAISING HOURS AVAILABLE

Last Box Tops for Education Contest This Year! 

This year Assumption has earned $696.40 for our Box Tops submissions. Thank you to everyone for making this happen, it is an easy way to get money (10 cents for each one) for our school and students.   

Our goal is $1,000 so if each classroom collects 340 Box Tops before June 14th (lofty goal but we challenge you to make it happen!) we will make our goal!  Ask family, friends and others to clip and collect! Let’s see what we can do! Turn your Box Tops in at the office in a ziploc or envelope with you name on it. Mr. C’s class won a pizza party for the last contest… happening in June! Congratulations! 

Make Jesus Day Camp the “MANE” Event this Summer! 

This epic African adventure engages the whole herd. At Roar, kids explore God’s goodness and celebrate a ferocious faith that powers them through this wild life. July 8-12 from 9:00A.M. – Noon. at St Joseph, Ferndale. Here is the link! 

 Gardening with Common Threads 

Hello families! Our students are enjoying gardening this spring! Now’s the time to look ahead to summer:  We are seeking families to help with summer garden care so that students can return to a well-tended, bountiful garden in the fall. Please contact me at lindsay@commonthreadsfarm.org if you are interested in helping with summer garden care, let me know your availability. (This counts toward your commitment hours!) 

Lost Coat, Family Moving 

One of our first-grade students lost his brand, new winter coat as the seasons were changing… kids go out with coats but shed them during recess! The coat was a black, boy’s Reebok. It has a hood and several pockets/zippers on the front. He has checked the Lost & Found bins several times a week since he lost it. Sometimes coats go home to the wrong house by mistake and not noticed because of the season change. Could you all check in your kids’ rooms to see if you have an extra coat that ended up in the back of a closet or under a bed? There was also a green UnderArmour stocking cap in the pocket. Thanks for your help!

Upcoming Calendar Items: 

May 13th – 18thMissoula Children’s Theater for K-8; Performances at 3:30 pm and 6 pm on May 18th. Cost is $35 per child, not $75 as advertised. 

May 17th – May Crowning Mass at 10:30 am 

May 17th – Jr. Ski to Sea Parade at 4 pm with the Root Beer and Brats fundraiser from 4- 8 pm 

June 7th– 10:30 am Volunteer of the Year recognized at the Tea; 11:30 Volunteers may bring a sack lunch and eat with students; Volunteer Appreciation Tea at 12:30 pm. Variety Show (1:00 pm to 3 pm- time has changed). See flier in last week’s envelope or here 

June 13th– Peace Festival from 12:30 to 3 pm. All grades K-7 participate in team-building games. Parents are invited to watch and help supervise the games.
